Styrian Science Slam am 10. November 2015: kreative Köpfe werden gesucht

Wer die eigene Forschung wirklich verständlich und pointiert vermittelt, kann das Publikum beim Science Slam für sich gewinnen und beim Saalvoting punkten. Kreative Ideen sind gefragt! Der dritte „Styrian Science Slam“ geht am 10. November 2015 in MUMUTH der Kunstuniversität Graz über die Bühne – wieder unter der Schirmherrschaft des Steirischen Hochschulraumes.

In Wien, Graz, Innsbruck, Linz und Salzburg werden Science Slams mit Unterstützung des BMWFW organisiert und regelmäßig vom Publikum gestürmt. WissenschafterInnen präsentieren dabei ihre aktuelle Forschung in jeweils sechs Minuten pointiert, verständlich und unterhaltsam. Ein Beamer ist nicht vorgesehen, kreative Hilfsmittel (Demoobjekte, Statisten, Soundeinspielungen, ...) sind hingegen sehr empfohlen, um auch komplexe Inhalte eindrücklich zu vermitteln.

Alle Fachrichtungen und Themen sind willkommen. Ob Bachelor, Master, (Post)Doc oder Prof. - Hauptsache die eigene Forschung wird präsentiert.
Nach sechs Minuten soll jede/r verstehen:
- womit man sich beschäftigt
- warum einen selbst dieses Thema fasziniert
- was dabei eines Tages herauskommen könnte

Am Ende des Abends bewertet das Publikum via Tischvoting Inhalt, Verständlichkeit und Kreativität jeder Präsentation und kürt so den Slam-Champion des Abends. Zu gewinnen gibt's ein iPad – und das Ticket für das große nationale Finale im April 2016! Die Veranstaltung präsentiert wieder Bernhard Weingartner, Gewinner des Inge-Morath-Preises für Wissenschaftskommunikation 2015.

Vorbereitung
Am Dienstag, den 3. November 2015 um 16:30 Uhr wird ein Vorbereitungsworkshop an der Uni Graz angeboten. Wer sich vorstellen, kann die eigene Forschung auf die Bühne zu bringen, ist dazu herzlich eingeladen. Erfahrungsgemäß ist die Stimmung in der interdisziplinären Gruppe dabei sehr produktiv, gemeinsam findet man viel leichter kreative Umsetzungsideen!

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
