GeologInnen der Uni Graz erforschen die Entstehung von Erdbeben vor Costa Rica

Knapp zwei Wochen ist es her, dass in der Karibik vor Honduras die Erde bebte. Erst im November letzten Jahres war es etwas weiter südlich, vor der Pazifik-Küste Costa Ricas, zu Erschütterungen gekommen. Dort schiebt sich die Cocosplatte in einem flachen Winkel von Süden her unter die Karibische Platte. Die Prozesse, die für die Entstehung von Erdbeben an erosiven Plattengrenzen verantwortlich sind, war Ziel des internationalen „Costa Rica Seismogenesis Project (CRISP)“ mit Beteiligung der Uni Graz. Die dabei mittels Tiefseebohrungen gewonnenen Proben werden nun in einem vom österreichischen Wissenschaftsfonds FWF geförderten Projekt unter der Leitung des Geologen Univ.-Prof. Dr. Walter Kurz weiter analysiert.

The Austrian Science Fund FWF has selected the Doctoral Programme in Theoretical Particle Physics at the University of Graz for funding from the Doc.funds. Six young scientists will be funded for 3.5 years. They will gain fundamentally new insights into the origins of the world.

Walking better with a prosthesis, successfully getting rid of excess weight, training more effectively, more fairness for trans people in sport: these were the topics addressed by the students at the University of Graz who were awarded the sports science prizes for their Master's theses on 3 December 2025.
