Reise um die Welt mit Ö3-Frühstückerin Claudia Stöckl und Pirans Bürgermeister Peter Bossman

Bunter, lebendiger und mitreißender: Der Multikulti-Ball am Samstag, den 15. Juni 2013, an der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz garantiert heuer ein besonderes Feuerwerk an Lebensfreude und verbindet auf einzigartige Weise Menschen aus mehr als 100 Nationen.
Das Afro-Asiatische Institut und die Uni Graz haben eine abwechslungsreiche Weltreise für Ohren, Augen und Gaumen in nur einer Nacht zusammengestellt!

Christa Neuper, Rektorin der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, und Claudia Unger, Leiterin des Afro-Asiatischen Instituts, stellten im Rahmen eines Pressegesprächs am 5. Juni 2013 die Details vor.
„Neben zahlreichen weltweiten Kooperationen bildet der Multikulti-Ball ein bedeutsames Zeichen des Miteinanders und setzt zugleich ein gesellschaftspolitisches Signal“, erklärte Rektorin Neuper.
Ball-Organisatorin Unger betonte: „Der Erlös fließt in das Stipendienprogramm des AAI, mit dem Studierende aus Afrika, Asien und Lateinamerika unterstützt werden, die nach ihrem Studium in der Steiermark in ihren Heimatländern aktiv an der Gesellschaft mitbauen.“

Ehrengäste
Unter den knapp 2000 BesucherInnen werden auch viele bekannte Persönlichkeiten erwartet, an der Spitze die beiden Ehrengäste: Ö3-Frühstückerin Claudia Stöckl, Obfrau von „ZUKI-Zukunft für Kinder“, und Peter Bossman, „schwarzer roter“ Bürgermeister von Piran.
Bossman, 1955 als Nachfahre eines niederländischen Händlers in Ghana geboren, arbeitet seit den 1980er-Jahren als Arzt in Koper (Slowenien) und lebt in Piran. Dort wurde Bossman 2010 zum ersten Bürgermeister afrikanischer Abstammung in Slowenien sowie in den mittel- und osteuropäischen Ländern gewählt.
Die Multiculti-Card 2013 geht an Ö3-Journalistin Claudia Stöckl, deren Engagement für „ZUKI“ damit gewürdigt wird. Stöckl, die jeden Sonntag mit „Frühstück bei mir“ für hohe HörerInnenquoten sorgt, übernahm 2008 die Leitung des Vereins, der insgesamt 800 bedürftige Kinder im Raum Kalkutta (Indien) betreut.

70 KünstlerInnen, vier Bühnen und drei Kilometer Kabel
Erstmals eröffnet wird der Ball – Schönwetter vorausgesetzt – auf dem Vorplatz der Uni Graz vor der einzigartigen Kulisse des Hauptgebäudes, das sich dann eine Nacht lang in einen der schönsten Ballsäle des Landes verwandelt.
Knapp 100 HelferInnen werden dafür drei Tage lang im Einsatz gewesen sein und insgesamt einen Marathon von mehr als 42 Kilometern auf dem Uni-Areal zurückgelegt haben.
Fast 3000 Meter Kabel werden verlegt, um mit Dutzenden Mikros und mehr als 130 Scheinwerfern die insgesamt 70 KünstlerInnen auf vier Bühnen in Szene zu setzen. Fast 6000 Quadratmeter der Uni werden zur multikulturellen Begegnungsstätte.

Künstlerische und kulinarische Leckerbissen
Von kubanischen Salsa-Rhythmen über mitreißende Balkan-Beats und afrikanische Stimmakrobatik bis hin zur Tanzmusik des Grazer Salonorchesters reicht das einzigartige musikalische Spektrum. Ebenso multikulturell ist das kulinarische Angebot: Leckerbissen aus Thailand, Indien und Steiermark laden zu einer genussreichen Weltreise.

Talent Talks bridge the gap in career guidance

The Styrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO Steiermark), the Styrian Chamber of Labour (AK Steiermark) and the AMS are joining forces when it comes to training young people and, through the “Talent Talks”, are creating a seamless pathway to career guidance. This takes preparation and follow-up support – just in time for the start of the term and the scheme’s tenth anniversary – to a whole new level. A new survey conducted by the Talent Centre among 2,687 former participants to mark the anniversary shows just how important this development is. Of the young people who received follow-up support from the Talent Report, 74.6 per cent stated that they had a good understanding of their own strengths and talents following the Talent Check. Without follow-up support, the figure was 66.5 per cent – a significant difference of 8.1 percentage points.

ERC Starting Grants: three million euros for two researchers at the University of Graz

Two researchers from the University of Graz have secured prestigious and generously funded grants from the EU. Starting Grants from the European Research Council (ERC), each worth 1.5 million euros, have been awarded to the human geographer Heide Bruckner and the social scientist Silvana Weiss.

Austria’s emissions rose in 2025: University of Graz researchers analyse the causes

The Environment Agency Austria has today published the figures for the country’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2025. While emissions fell sharply year on year from 2022 to 2024, they rose again by just under 0.7 per cent in 2025. Researchers at the University of Graz have analysed how much of this increase was due to structural changes in the economy and how much was attributable to external factors over which there is little control. “In 2025, the colder winter compared with 2024 increased emissions by 0.81 per cent, while the weak economy reduced them by 0.38 per cent. If we factor out these influences, we find an underlying increase of 0.26 per cent compared with the previous year,” reports economist Karl Steininger. “This clearly means that Austria is not on track to meet its climate targets, which require a substantial reduction in emissions by 2030.”
