Innovative Tagung mit innovativen Ideen: „Future Space“ in die Grazer Seifenfabrik

Bei „Future Space“ von BioTechMed-Graz wurden Forschungsideen geboren

Die Forschungskooperation zwischen Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, TU Graz und Medizinischer Universität Graz beschritt Anfang Mai 2015 einen innovativen und kreativen Weg zur wissenschaftlichen Vernetzung in der Grazer Gesundheitsforschung.  
Dazu lud BioTechMed-Graz zum „Future Space“ in die Grazer Seifenfabrik. Diese zweitägige Veranstaltung stand ganz im Zeichen der Kreativität und Innovation in Wissenschaft und Forschung.
Eröffnet wurde Tag 1 mit einem „Scientific Speed Dating“. In insgesamt drei Runden hatten die TeilnehmerInnen die Möglichkeit, ihre KollegInnen aus Wissenschaft und Forschung an den Partneruniversitäten näher kennen zu lernen und sich zu vernetzen. Darauf folgte die Präsentation der vier Fachbereiche, in denen BioTechMed-Graz Forschung betreibt. Dies sind: Molekulare Biomedizin, Neurowissenschaften, Pharmazeutische und Medizinische Technologie und Quantitative Biomedizin und Modellierung.

Nach der Vorstellung der Fachbereiche bot sich den TeilnehmerInnen die fakultative Möglichkeit zur Selbstpräsentation der persönlichen Forschungsschwerpunkte. Im anschließenden „Marketplace“ konnten die WissenschafterInnen völlig frei im Rahmen der vier Fachbereiche zu aktuellen Forschungsthemen und Forschungsvorhaben miteinander ins Gespräch kommen. Aus diesen Gesprächen entwickelten sich „Creativity Cells“ – themenspezifische Gruppen, an denen WissenschafterInnen von mindestens zwei Universitäten beteiligt sind. Dadurch eröffnete sich auch die einmalige Möglichkeit, mit potenziellen neuen KooperationspartnerInnen direkt und unkompliziert ins Gespräch zu kommen.

Aus diesen kreativen Zellen kristallisierten sich insgesamt 13 Forschungsprojekte heraus, die am zweiten Veranstaltungstag dem Publikum präsentiert wurden. Die anwesenden WissenschafterInnen hatten im Anschluss dazu auch die Möglichkeit, die vorgestellten Projektideen wissenschaftlich zu bewerten.

EU funding boosts international exchange between universities

The University of Graz is further expanding its international study opportunities through the European university alliance Arqus and is taking the lead in two key projects. In future, students will benefit from even more joint degree programmes and from simplified recognition of academic achievements through the Joint European Degree Label.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
