Kolloquium zum Jubiläum des Archivs der Uni Graz

Vor fünfzig Jahren wurde der Grundstein für die Entwicklung des Archivs der Universität Graz zu einer Stätte der Forschung gelegt. Aus diesem Anlass lud die Einrichtung unter der Leitung von Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Alois Kernbauer zum Österreichischen Universitätsarchivkolloquium, das sich am 14. und 15. April 2015 der Historischen Wissenschaftsforschung widmet. Die Tagung soll die Vernetzung unter den Universitätsarchiven auf der Forschungsebene national und international vor allem mit den Ländern Südosteuropas intensivieren, um eine Basis für gemeinsame Projekte zu schaffen.

„Das Archiv ist nicht nur das Gewissen und Gedächtnis der Universität, sondern auch eine Stätte der Forschung zur Rolle der Universität in wechselnden sozialen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Verhältnissen“, betonte Vizerektor Peter Scherrer bei der Eröffnung des Kolloquiums. Darüber hinaus unterstrich Scherrer die Bedeutung des Grazer Universitätsarchivs sowohl im Hinblick auf die historischen Verbindungen im ehemaligen Habsburgerreich als auch in der Kooperation mit Einrichtungen in den heutigen Staaten Südosteuropas.

Alois Kernbauer gab in seinen einführenden Worten einen Überblick über die Entwicklung des Archivs der Uni Graz seit 1964/65, als Prof. Hermann Wiesflecker im Akademischen Senat die Rückführung der Archivalien vom Landesarchiv an die Universität und die Einrichtung eines Archivs beantragte, das sich auch als Forschungsstelle verstehen sollte. Für dessen Aufbau, der im Jahre 1968 begann, zeichnete der damalige Assistent Wiesfleckers, Univ.-Prof. i.R. Dr. Walter Höflechner, verantwortlich. 1983 folgte er Prof. Wiesflecker als Universitätsarchivar nach.

Die rege Forschungstätigkeit der neuen Einrichtung fand bald Niederschlag in zahlreichen Publikationen. „Die Reihe ,Publikationen aus dem Archiv der Universität Graz‘ umfasst heute rund 60 Bände“, freut sich Kernbauer berichten zu können.

Walter Höflechner hielt den Eröffnungsvortrag der Tagung, in dem er sich mit „Universität, Universitätsarchiv, Universitätsgeschichte und Wissenschaftsgeschichte“ befasste.
Am 15. April stehen Beiträge von WissenschafterInnen aus Graz, Innsbruck, Wien, Debrecen und Ljubljana auf dem Programm.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
