Feierliche Eröffnung des Doktoratskollegs an der Uni Graz

Grüne Weihnachten, Winter-Temperaturen im zweistelligen Plus-Bereich, im Sommer Hagel und Dürre. Wie schnell es tatsächlich wärmer wird, auf welche Wetter-Ereignisse wir uns einstellen müssen und wie Landwirtschaft oder Tourismus darauf reagieren sollen, erforschen Nachwuchs-WissenschafterInnen an der Uni Graz. Am 28. Jänner 2015 wird das interdisziplinäre Doktoratskolleg „Klimawandel – Unsicherheiten, Schwellenwerte und Strategien“, das der Österreichische Wissenschaftsfonds FWF mit rund 2,2 Millionen Euro fördert, feierlich eröffnet.
„Dass der Mensch entscheidend zum Klimawandel beiträgt, steht fest. Die längerfristigen Entwicklungen und möglichen Folgen sind hingegen von großen Unsicherheiten geprägt“, schildert der Philosoph und Klimaethiker Univ.-Prof. Dr. Lukas Meyer, Sprecher des Kollegs. Die vielschichtigen Konsequenzen der Veränderungen besser zu verstehen, ist ein Ziel des Programms, das derzeit 13 DissertantInnen aus sieben Ländern eine adäquat bezahlte wissenschaftliche Karriere in einem qualitativ hochwertigen Umfeld ermöglicht. Die JungwissenschafterInnen sollen beispielsweise jene Schwellenwerte herausfinden, deren Überschreitung die Funktion von ökologischen, sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Systemen gefährdet. „Damit sollen klare Grenzen für den Fortbestand unserer Umwelt und Gesellschaft gefunden werden, die auch das Wohlergehen der Menschen rund um den Globus garantieren“, präzisiert Meyer.
Das Ausbildungsprogramm wird von elf ProfessorInnen und ihren Teams aus vier Fakultäten getragen und ist Teil des Forschungsschwerpunkts „Umwelt und Globaler Wandel“. Es arbeiten ExpertInnen aus verschiedenen Zweigen zusammen, nämlich Philosophie, Systemwissenschaften, Ökonomie, Geowissenschaften, Meteorologie und Klimaforschung. Das Doktoratskolleg wurde für vier Jahre bewilligt und kann nach positiver Evaluierung auf bis zu insgesamt zwölf Jahre verlängert werden.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
