Douglas Maraun ist neuer Leiter der Forschungsgruppe ReLoClim am Wegener Center für Klima und Globalen Wandel

Regionales Klima besser verstehen und seine Entwicklung im Zuge des Klimawandels beobachten beziehungsweise prognostizieren: Mit diesem Gebiet beschäftigt sich die Forschungsgruppe ReLoClim (Regional and Local Climate Modeling and Analysis Research Group) am Wegener Center für Klima und Globalen Wandel der Uni Graz. Die WissenschafterInnen verwenden dabei sowohl Modellrechnungen als auch statistische Methoden, die Messdaten der vergangenen  Jahrzehnte miteinbeziehen.


Wie diese beiden Herangehensweisen noch besser miteinander vernetzt werden können, war unter anderem Diskussionsgegenstand eines Workshops, der am 7. und 8. September 2015 an der Karl-Franzens-Universität stattfand. International höchst anerkannte Klima-ForscherInnen kamen für den Workshop nach Graz, dessen Organisation mit Ass.-Prof. Dr. Douglas Maraun gleich ein Neuzugang am Wegener Center über hatte. Maraun ist seit Anfang September 2015 als Nachfolger von Ass.-Prof. Dr. Andreas Gobiet neuer ReLoClim-Leiter. Ein Thema des Workshops war auch die Zusammenarbeit in sogenannten „Flagship pilot studies“: „Das sind Untersuchungen ausgewählter Regionen – wie zum Beispiel der Steiermark – mit modernsten Modellen, anhand derer hochaktuelle Klimafragen untersucht werden“, erklärt Maraun, bisher Juniorprofessor in Kiel, Deutschland. Kommende Woche reist Maraun nach Brasilien, um bei einer internationalen Tagung des Weltklimarats über regionale Klimaforschung zu diskutieren.


Auch der Leiter des Wegener Center, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gottfried Kirchengast, zeigt sich hoch zufrieden mit der neuen Besetzung: „Wir freuen uns, dass mit Douglas Maraun einer der herausragenden jungen europäischen Kollegen im Feld Regionale Klimamodellierung und Klimaanalyse sich für Graz entschieden hat und unser Team am Wegener Center verstärkt. Ein weiterer guter Schritt für unsere internationale Positionierung.“ Die Forschungen der Regional and Local Climate Modeling and Analysis Research Group sind primär im Forschungsschwerpunkt „Umwelt und Globaler Wandel" sowie für Bereiche der Klimamodellierung im Forschungsschwerpunkt "Modelle und Simulation", verankert.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
