Die Amerikanistik feierte den 65. Geburtstag von Walter Hölbling und das 40-jährige Bestehen des Instituts an der Uni Graz

Gleich zwei Jubliäen feierte am 8. Oktober 2012 das Institut für Amerikanistik der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz im Meerscheinschlössl mit dem Symposium „Re-thinking American Studies“: Zum einen blickt das Institut heuer auf vier Jahrzehnte seines Bestehens zurück. Zum anderen beging Univ.-Prof. i.R. Dr. Walter Hölbling, der seit den Anfängen an der Amerikanistik geforscht und gelehrt hatte, seinen 65. Geburtstag.

 

Vizerektor Martin Polaschek gratulierte dem Jubilar und unterstrich die vielfältigen internationalen Erfahrungen und Kontakte von Walter Hölbling: „Er ist ein Gelehrter, der bereits in jungen Jahren an verschiedenen amerikanischen und europäischen Universitäten tätig war", so Polaschek, der darüber hinaus auf die große Beliebtheit der Amerikanistik bei den Studierenden verwies: „Dass die Nachfrage nach Masterarbeiten und Dissertationen so groß ist, liegt auch an den WissenschafterInnen, die diese Studien an der Universität Graz betreiben.“

Dekan Helmut Konrad dankte Walter Hölbling unter anderem für sein konstruktives und ausgleichendes Wirken an der Fakultät und auch Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Klaus Rieser, Leiter des Instituts für Amerikanistik, hob die gute Zusammenarbeit hervor.

 

Das Symposium bot Gelegenheit, das Feld der Amerikastudien in den USA und in Europa neu zu überdenken und die Veränderungen zu betrachten, die die Disziplin in den letzten vier Jahrzehnten erfahren hat – Hand in Hand mit sozialen, kulturellen und institutionellen Veränderungen sowohl in den USA als auch über deren Grenzen hinaus. Als Vortragende konnten die renommierten AmerikanistInnen Prof. Paul Lauter vom Trinity College in Hartford/Connecticut und Prof. Justine Tally von der University of La Laguna in Spanien gewonnen werden.

 

Walter Hölbling zählt seit vierzig Jahren selbst zu den international bedeutendsten Wissenschaftern im Vorhaben, die Amerikastudien neu zu entwickeln. Er blickt auf zahlreiche Publikationen über amerikanische Literatur, Kultur, Geschichte und die Theorie der europäischen Amerikastudien zurück und ist Autor einer herausragenden Monographie über die Kriegsliteratur sowie Herausgeber einiger Anthologien zu amerikanischer Identität, Migrationspolitik und Postmoderner Theorie. Neben seinen wissenschaftlichen Leistungen war Walter Hölbling viele Jahre in der European Association of American Studies (EAAS) engagiert.
