Joseph Marko bringt bei der Zypern-Konferenz in Genf seine Expertise als Rechtsberater des UN-Sondergesandten ein

In Genf verhandeln derzeit VertreterInnen der Volksgruppen Zyperns sowie der Garantiemächte Türkei, Griechenland und Großbritannien erstmals seit 43 Jahren über eine Wiedervereinigung der Mittelmeer-Insel. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Joseph Marko, der im Juni 2016 zum Rechtsberater des UN-Sondergesandten für Zypern, Espen Barth Eide, bestellt wurde, begleitet die Gespräche.

Seit 1974 ist Zypern geteilt. Griechische und türkische ZyprerInnen leben durch Mauern, Stacheldraht und eine Pufferzone voneinander getrennt. Der griechische Teil gehört zur Europäischen Union, den anderen erkennt nur die Türkei an. Eide hofft als Ergebnis der Konferenz in Genf auf eine dauerhafte Lösung mit zwei Bundesstaaten in einem föderalen System.

Die Verhandlungen sind sehr komplex. Nahezu monatlich finden Gespräche statt, bei denen Joseph Marko sein umfassendes internationales Expertenwissen einbringen kann. Von 1997 bis 2002 war der Jurist der Uni Graz Internationaler Richter am Verfassungsgericht von Bosnien und Herzegowina, von 1999 bis 2001 dessen Vizepräsident.
