Forschungsprojekt zum Thema "Umweltfreundlicher Einsatz von Kohlendioxid in chemischer Industrie" für Houskapreis 2013 nominiert

Die zehn besten universitären Forschungsprojekte Österreichs stehen fest, drei der Top-10-Nominierungen für den Houskapreis 2013 gehen in die Steiermark, eine an die Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz. Dr. Silvia Glück vom Institut für Chemie hat beste Chancen mit ihrem Forschungsprojekt - sie entwickelt mit ihrem Team eine umweltfreundliche Methode zur Nutzung von Kohlendioxid für die chemische Industrie - den mit insgesamt 300.000 Euro dotierten Houskapreis für sich zu gewinnen. Einmal im Jahr vergibt die "B&C Privatstiftung" diese hochkarätige Auszeichnung an wirtschaftsnahe Forschung, die an Österreichs Universitäten betrieben wird. Heuer findet die Verleihung am 25. April im Rahmen einer feierlichen Gala in Wien statt.

 

Zum Projekt
In Graz konnte durch eine einzigartige Kooperation von ACIB (Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology), der Universität Graz und PartnerInnen aus der Industrie, unter anderem der Firma DSM Fine Chemicals Austria, ein neuer und ganz besonders "grüner" Lösungsansatz zur Nutzung von CO2 als Synthesebaustein unter Verwendung von biologischen Katalysatoren (Enzymen) entwickelt werden. Als Biokatalysatoren wurden die Enzyme Decarboxylasen verwendet, die Bicarbonat (Speisesoda) an aromatische Substrate binden können und auf diese Weise CO2 enzymatisch fixieren. Mit dieser neuen Technologie konnte eine große Zahl an strukturell unterschiedlichen Substraten, bevorzugt Phenol- und Styrol-Derivate, regioselektiv zu den entsprechenden Carbonsäuren umgesetzt werden. Carbonsäuren werden in zahlreichen Bereichen der chemischen Industrie als molekulare Bausteine zur Herstellung von Kosmetika, Agrochemikalien, und Pharamazeutika, wie zum Beispiel Aspirin, eingesetzt. Da die Bio-Carboxylierung bei sehr milden Reaktionsbedingungen in neutraler wässriger Lösung durchgeführt werden kann, wird den steigenden Anforderungen hinsichtlich der Ökologisierung von chemischen Herstellungsverfahren Rechnung getragen, was vor allem vom Gesichtspunkt der industriellen Nutzbarkeit von enormer Bedeutung ist.
