Studierende aus 30 Ländern diskutieren bei der Graz International Summer School Seggau mit ExpertInnen Chancen und Perspektiven

Alljährlich lädt die „Graz International Summer School Seggau“ (GUSEGG) rund 80 Studierende aus Europa und anderen Kontinenten ein, mit ExpertInnen aus Wissenschaft und Praxis gesellschaftspolitische Herausforderungen zu diskutieren. Unter dem Thema „Transformation, Transgressions, and Trust in Europe and the Americas“ befasst sich das Symposium heuer von 3. bis 17. Juli mit aktuellen Chancen und Perspektiven für eine vitale Gesellschaft.

Neben interdisziplinären Vorlesungen und Seminaren bietet die Sommerschule, die von der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz gemeinsam mit der Kommission der Bischofskonferenzen der EU-Staaten (COMECE) und der Diözese Graz-Seckau veranstaltet wird, den Studierenden auf Schloss Seggau auch Gelegenheit zu weiterführenden Gesprächen mit den Lehrenden, woraus in der Vergangenheit immer wieder neue Kooperationen entstanden sind. Für die wissenschaftliche Konzeption, das Programm und die inhaltliche Gestaltung der GUSEGG zeichnet Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Roberta Maierhofer, unter anderem Leiterin des Zentrums für Interamerikanische Studien der Uni Graz, verantwortlich.
Rektorin Christa Neuper, Michael Kuhn, stv. Generalsekretär der COMECE, und Diözesanbischof Wilhelm Krautwaschl werden die Sommerschule am Sonntag, den 3. Juli 2016 um 20 Uhr auf Schloss Seggau eröffnen.

Rund 900 Studierende aus etwa 50 Ländern haben seit 2006 an der GUSEGG teilgenommen. Deshalb gibt es seit 2014 eine Kooperation mit dem alumni UNI graz, um mit AbsolventInnen der GUSEGG Gespräch und Nachhaltigkeit über Generationen hinweg zu ermöglichen. Der „Alumni-Tag“ am 6. Juli 2016 widmet sich dem Thema „Transcending Rules: Public Opinions, Political Involvement, and Protests“ und richtet sich als öffentliche Veranstaltung an alle Interessierten.
Auf dem Programm stehen ab 15 Uhr Vorträge von Helga Kromp-Kolb (Universität für Bodenkultur Wien), Stefan Storr (Uni Graz) und Martin Hubinger (Uni Graz); TeilnehmerInnen der Diskussionsrunde sind Mirko Petrić (Uni Zadar), Luis San Vicente Portes (Montclair State University USA) und Kim Sawchuk (Concordia University Kanada). Der Abend steht ab 20 Uhr unter dem Titel „Past and Present“: In einer Podiumsdiskussion werden Vergangenheit und Gegenwart der GUSEGG und globale Entwicklungen beleuchtet.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
