Dominik Großkinsky erforscht die Abwehrkraft von Pflanzen gegen ein gefürchtetes Bakterium.

Dominik Großkinsy erhält Preis der Deutschen Botanischen Gesellschaft

Dominik Großkinsky, Nachwuchsforscher am Institut für Pflanzenwissenschaften der Uni Graz, bekommt heute den mit 2.500 Euro dotierten Wilhelm-Pfeffer-Preis der Deutschen Botanischen Gesellschaft überreicht. Er fand heraus, dass das Hormon Cytokinin die Abwehrkraft von Pflanzen steigert. Diese körpereigene Substanz fördert unter anderem das Wachstum, regt aber auch die Produktion eines Antibiotikums an. Damit kann ein bestimmtes Bakterium, das immer wieder zu starken Ernteeinbußen bei Äpfeln, Kartoffeln oder Tomaten führt, effektiv bekämpft werden. Wie Großkinsky erstmals beweisen konnte, wird Cytokinin auch von bestimmten Mikroben abgegeben und stärkt sogar dann die Abwehrkraft der infizierten Pflanzen. Damit eröffnet der Forscher neue Möglichkeiten zur biologischen Bekämpfung des schädlichen Bakteriums.
Den Wilhelm-Pfeffer-Preis verleiht die Deutsche Botanische Gesellschaft seit 1990 alle zwei Jahre für eine herausragende Dissertation aus den Pflanzenwissenschaften.
