Ein internationaler Kongress von Studierenden für Studierende findet diese Woche an der Uni Graz statt

Von Studierenden für Studierende lautet die Devise der internationalen Nachwuchskonferenz „Failure & Beyond. Telling History – Shaping Memory“ vom 6. bis 12. September 2015 an der Uni Graz. Das Besondere ist nicht nur die internationale Ausrichtung der Tagung: Studierende aus 26 Universitätsstädten in 18 Ländern nehmen daran teil und widmen sich dem Spannungsbogen von erzählter Geschichte und geformter Erinnerung.

Bemerkenswert ist auch, dass Studierende für die gesamte Organisation der wissenschaftlichen Veranstaltung verantwortlich sind. Lisbeth Matzer, Vizepräsidentin des Dachverbandes ISHA International und Obmann-Stv. des Vereines International Students of History Association (ISHA) Graz, hat gemeinsam mit Markus Wurzer, Obmann ISHA Graz, und einem studentischen Team von insgesamt 30 KollegInnen die Konferenz auf die Beine gestellt. „Wir wollen Geschichte-Studierenden eine Möglichkeit geben, Geschichte aus internationaler Perspektive zu diskutieren, aber auch neue Leute kennenzulernen und Kontakte zu knüpfen“, erklärt Matzer das Ziel. „Unser Konzept sieht vor, dass Platz für Studierende aller Levels von Bachelor bis zum PhD ist“, so die Studentin, die derzeit gerade ihre Masterarbeit über die Hitlerjugend in der Steiermark abschließt.

Als Eröffnungsredner konnte Kerem Öktem, Professor für Südosteuropa mit dem Schwerpunkt Türkei an der Uni Graz, gewonnen werden. Öktem wird die Tagung am 7. September 2015 ab 10 Uhr im Meerscheinschlössl mit seinem Vortrag über das Failure/Success-Paradigm eröffnen.

International Students of History Association ist eine internationale, unpolitische, unabhängige Non-Profit-Organisation. Sie wurde 1989 in Budapest gegründet und hat sich zu einem internationalen Netzwerk für Geschichte-Studierende und junge Forschende entwickelt, das in 22 europäischen Ländern tätig ist. Die Grazer ISHA-Sektion bestand bereits in den 1990er-Jahren und wurde 2013 von Matzer und Wurzer wieder gegründet.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
