Der Förder-Vermittler

Martin Koller unterstützt ChemikerInnen an der Uni Graz beim Einwerben von Drittmitteln

Woher bekomme ich Gelder für meine Forschung? Wie schreibt man einen Projektantrag richtig? Sind alle erforderlichen Formalitäten erfüllt? Für ChemikerInnen an der Uni Graz beantwortet diese Fragen Martin Koller. Der promovierte Biotechnologe ist Mitarbeiter des Forschungsmanagement und -service und sorgt dafür, dass gute Ideen auch umgesetzt werden können.

„Am Institut für Chemie gibt es exzellente Arbeiten und sehr viel Potenzial für Drittmittel, allerdings werden die Ansprüche der FördergeberInnen immer komplexer“, weiß Koller, der selbst an der TU Graz ein EU-Projekt geleitet hat. Allein für die Antragstellung muss man mehrere Monate an Zeitaufwand kalkulieren, und die Bewilligungsquoten sinken stetig. „Für das Verfassen eines guten Proposals ist mittlerweile einiges an Know-how erforderlich“, berichtet der Experte aus eigener Erfahrung. Damit den WissenschafterInnen auch noch Luft zum Forschen bleibt, übernimmt Koller diese Arbeit, kümmert sich außerdem um Projektanbahnung und -abwicklung, sucht potenzielle PartnerInnen, erstellt Budgets und ist im ständigen Kontakt mit den verschiedenen Fonds und Organisationen auf nationaler wie internationaler Ebene. „Wir versuchen, in die ganz großen Förderschienen hineinzukommen. Derzeit laufen zwei Anträge für ERC-Advanced-Grants, die mit bis zu 2,5 Millionen Euro dotiert sind“, verrät Koller.

Dass er selbst dafür den Labormantel an den Nagel gehängt hat, stört ihn wenig: „Für meine Arbeit ist sehr viel Fachwissen nötig. Ich bin also nicht nur auf der Suche nach neuen Geldquellen, sondern lese mich auch in das breite Spektrum der Chemie ein“, erzählt er. Privat bleibt zumindest noch Zeit für Passiv-Forschung: Koller ist als Reviewer für Fachartikel tätig und Mitglied in zwei Editorial Boards.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
