Auf der Spur von Diabetes und Fettleibigkeit

Internationale SpitzenforscherInnen tagen an der Uni Graz

Weltweit wird ein drastischer Anstieg von Fettstoffwechselstörungen und den daraus resultierenden Erkrankungen wie Typ-2 Diabetes, Atherosklerose und Fettleibigkeit verzeichnet. Zurzeit leiden mehr als 370 Millionen Menschen an Diabetes, für das Jahr 2050 wird mit einem Anstieg auf 550 Millionen gerechnet. Der Aufklärung der molekularen Ursachen und der Suche nach neuartigen Diagnose- und Behandlungsmethoden widmet sich eine mit etwa 150 SpitzenforscherInnen besetzte Tagung vom 7. bis 9. April 2016 an der Uni Graz.

BioTechMed-Graz, die Kooperation von Karl-Franzens-Universität, Technischer Universität und Medizinischer Universität zu Forschungen für Gesundheit, bildet die Plattform für das „International Graz Symposium on Lipid and Membrane Biology”, das zum bereits sechsten Mal in Graz stattfindet. Die ReferentInnen stammen aus Europa und den USA, sind weltweit führende ExpertInnen und spannen in ihren Vorträgen den Bogen von der Erforschung fettgesteuerter zellulärer Signalprozesse in Modellorganismen bis hin zu biomedizinischen und pathobiologischen Untersuchungen im Menschen.

Für das Impulsreferat konnte die internationale Koryphäe Sir Stephen O’Rahilly gewonnen werden. O’Rahilly ist Institutsleiter des Department of Clinical Biochemistry and Medicine der Universität Cambridge (Großbritannien) sowie Direktor der Metabolic Research Laboratories und des Institute of Metabolic Science in Cambridge. Seine Forschungsprojekte konzentrieren sich auf die genetischen Ursachen von Typ 2-Diabetes und Fettleibigkeit. Für seine bahnbrechenden Arbeiten erhielt der weltweit bekannte Forscher eine Vielzahl renommierter Preise, darunter den im Vorjahr erstmals vergebenen EASD-Novo Nordisk Foundation Diabetes Prize for Excellence.

Das Symposium wird im Rahmen von BioTechMed-Graz gemeinsam mit dem Institut für Molekulare Biowissenschaften der Uni Graz und dem vom FWF geförderten Netzwerkprojekt SFB LIPOTOX veranstaltet. Für die wissenschaftliche Leitung zeichnet Univ.-Prof. Dr. Rudolf Zechner verantwortlich.

These and other questions will be answered during the Long Night of Research at the University of Graz: on Friday, 24 April 2025, from 5 pm to 11 pm, in the University Library. Visitors can immerse themselves in the diversity of languages without travelling far by taking part in a quiz at the station.
