In the Middle Ages, monks left notes in the margins and between the lines when copying important manuscripts. Thus they recorded their knowledge or excerpts from their everyday lives. As in today's social media, these so-called glosses were commented on by other scholars. Inside the books they spread throughout the continent. Bernhard Bauer analyses these notes to find out more about the mostly anonymous scholars, their intellectual background and the linguistic influences between Latin and Celtic.
