Aktuelle Studie beziffert Kosten des Nicht-Handelns für Österreich mit 15 Milliarden Euro pro Jahr

Die Auswirkungen der Klimakrise, das Festhalten an Systemen, die auf fossilen Brennstoffen basieren, sowie deren Förderung belasten Österreichs Wirtschaft, die Gesundheit und das öffentliche Budget mit rund 15 Milliarden Euro pro Jahr. In wenigen Jahren könnte diese Summe auf jährlich 20 Milliarden steigen. Das ist das Ergebnis einer aktuellen Studie der Universität Graz und der Medizinischen Universität Wien im Auftrag des Klima- und Energiefonds. Die AutorInnen fordern daher rasches Handeln und sehen die Corona-Krise als Chance für klimagerechte Investitionen.

„Aus der Corona-Krise wissen wir, dass rechtzeitiges Handeln unabdingbar ist, um absehbare dramatische Folgen zu vermeiden. Die direkten Schäden, die mit einem weiter ansteigenden Klimawandel verbunden sind, manifestieren sich zwar langsamer als jene dieser Pandemie, sind aber massiver und viel länger anhaltend“, sagt Volkswirt Karl Steininger, leitender Autor der am 25. Juni 2020 bei einer Pressekonferenz in Wien präsentierten Studie „Klimapolitik in Österreich: Kosten des Nicht-Handelns“.
Die WissenschafterInnen sind sich einig: „Aktuelle Rahmenbedingungen schaffen eine einzigartige Chance, staatliche Politik zugunsten nachhaltig gesunder Strukturen zu setzen – und dies zu geringeren finanziellen, sozialen und politischen Kosten, als das wohl je sonst möglich gewesen wäre.“ Der niedrige Ölpreis würde den Abbau umweltschädlicher Subventionen ebenso wie eine frühere Einführung der geplanten CO2-Steuer erleichtern. Letztere könnte vorübergehend auch helfen, die durch die Corona-Unterstützungsmaßnahmen stark belasteten öffentlichen Budgets zu sanieren.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
