Die Universität Graz lädt zu virtuellen Rundgängen durch diverse Sammlungen

Den berühmten Tatortkoffer im Hans Gross-Kriminalmuseum genau unter die Lupe nehmen. Wertvolle Vasen drehen und wenden und so mehr über den Alltag in der Antike erfahren. Alles möglich – trotz Lockdown. Die Universität Graz hat einige ihrer Sammlungen virtuell von 0 bis 24 Uhr geöffnet. Angelehnt an einen Hollywoodfilm mit Ben Stiller nicht nur nachts, sondern stets im Museum!
 
Wie CSI vor mehr als 100 Jahren begonnen hat, lässt sich anhand der Objekte des Kriminalmuseums erschließen. Diebswerkzeuge sind ebenso dokumentiert wie Giftstoffe und Requisiten von Falschspielern. Ein virtueller Rundgang durch die archäologische Sammlung macht lebendig, wie sich Frauen vor mehr als 2000 Jahren kleideten und frisierten. So nah wie sonst kaum möglich lassen sich auch andere Gegenstände heranzoomen, darunter Siegel von Kaisern und Päpsten, die in der Sammlung der Universität großteils als Wachs- und Gipsabgüsse erhalten sind.
 
„Die Digitalisierung der Objekte erleichtert zum einen die ständige Verfügbarkeit für alle Interessierten, sie dient zum anderen der Forschung“, unterstreicht Nikolaus Reisinger, Leiter der Universitätsmuseen, den Mehrwert für Öffentlichkeit und Wissenschaft. Dementsprechend sind die Hintergrundinformationen detailreich angegeben und erfüllen wissenschaftliche Standards.
 
Diese Sammlungen sind zudem Teil der Plattform „Kultur- und Wissenschaftserbe Steiermark“. Unter Federführung der Universität Graz hatten sich TU Graz, Kunstuniversität Graz, GrazMuseum, Universalmuseum Joanneum sowie Land Steiermark zum Projekt „Repositorium Steirisches Wissenschaftserbe“ zusammengeschlossen. Ziel des Vorhabens war es, steirisches Kultur- und Wissensgut digital aufzubereiten, zu sichern und öffentlich zugänglich zu machen. Seit 2017 ist das „Kultur- und Wissenschaftserbe Steiermark“ online und kostenlos verfügbar.

Electrifying: Researchers film the first moments on the way from light to electricity

Physicists at the University of Graz (Austria), in collaboration with colleagues from Marburg University and Forschungszentrum Jülich (Germany), have achieved a scientific breakthrough. For the first time, the generation of electrical energy from light has been filmed and described theoretically. At the University of Graz, researchers are discussing these issues at a conference being held in Austria for the first time.

Jurassic Sounds: Biologist reconstructs insect songs from 165 million years ago

It was apparently not just the roars of the dinosaurs that made up the soundscape of the animal world during the Jurassic period. Crickets and grasshoppers communicated through a variety of songs and high-pitched sounds, as Thorin Jonsson from the Institute of Biology at the University of Graz discovered together with colleagues from the universities of Lincoln, Bristol (UK), Beijing (China) and Tempe (USA). The findings on what are so far the oldest traces of sound on Earth have just been published in the journal PNAS.
