Historiker Martin Moll präsentiert heute das erste fundierte Gesamtpanorama des Kronlandes Steiermark zwischen 1914 und 1918

Auf dem Gebiet des Kronlandes Steiermark, das damals noch die mehrheitlich slowenisch sprechende Untersteiermark umfasste, fiel zwischen 1914 und 1918 kein Schuss. Dennoch war der Weltkrieg, der erste totale Krieg, auch im steirischen Hinterland massiv spürbar. Schon im Sommer des ersten Kriegsjahres kam es zu einer Verfolgungswelle gegen die slowenische Bevölkerung. Im Land wurden Lager für Zehntausende Zwangsinternierte, Kriegsgefangene und -flüchtlinge errichtet sowie Lazarette installiert. Die prekäre Lebensmittelversorgung verschlechterte sich von Monat zu Monat, Hungerproteste erschütterten das Land. Die Rüstungsproduktion, die in der Steiermark einen ihrer Hauptstandorte hatte, wurde damit ebenso beeinträchtigt. Als die Monarchie im Herbst 1918 kollabierte, rührte sich kaum eine Hand, um die Steiermark zu bewahren, das Unterland spaltete sich von Rest-Österreich ab.

Martin Moll entwirft in seinem Buch "Die Steiermark im Ersten Weltkrieg. Der Kampf des Hinterlandes ums Überleben 1914-1918" das erste fundierte Gesamtpanorama eines hochindustrialisierten, zweisprachigen Kronlandes der Habsburgermonarchie während der vier langen Kriegsjahre. Basierend auf der dichten Aktenlage wird anschaulich geschildert, wie der mörderische Kampf auch das Leben der Zivilbevölkerung und die Arbeit der Behörden weitab von den Fronten massiv in Mitleidenschaft zog. Präsentiert wird der Band heute um 19.30 Uhr in der Grazer Buchhandlung Moser - gemeinsam mit der Publikation von Sabine A. Haring und Helmut Kuzmics (siehe News vom 23. Juni).

Hot and hotter: Weather station records record-breaking summer temperatures

It has been an exceptionally hot summer so far. The meteorological station at the University of Graz has also reported record temperatures. Unprecedented in the history of weather records dating back to 1894: 44 days above 30 degrees within a single year, six of which were above 35 degrees!

A study by the University of Graz shows that the majority of graduates have clear career plans. The desire for self-employment grows with professional experience and affects all disciplines equally.
