Beim SOWI-Fakultätstag wurden Top-Leistungen von AbsolventInnen präsentiert und prämiert

Zum 22. Mal lud die Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaftliche (SOWI) Fakultät der Universität Graz am 12. November 2019 zum alljährlichen „SOWI im Dialog“, zur Präsentation der 20 besten Abschlussarbeiten des vergangenen Studienjahres. Als Höhepunkt des Fakultätstags wurden die VerfasserInnen prämiert, ebenso wie die 15 Top-AbsolventInnen im SOWI-Ranking. Als Bester ging Manuel Gruber hervor, gefolgt von Philipp Ulbing, beide Absolventen des Masterstudiums Politische und Empirische Ökonomik. Auf Platz 3 landete Anna Klieber, Absolventin des Masterstudiums Soziologie. Voraussetzungen, um ins SOWI-Ranking aufgenommen zu werden, sind ein Studienabschluss mit ausgezeichnetem Erfolg und eine mit „Sehr gut“ benotete Masterarbeit. Über die Reihung entscheiden dann Notendurchschnitt und Studiendauer.

„Die Veranstaltung soll die Leistungen der Fakultät ins Schaufenster stellen“, betonte Rektor Martin in seiner Begrüßung und dankte den Sponsoren – der GRAWE und dem SOWI-AbsolventInnenverein –, die alljährlich die Preise für die Ausgezeichneten zur Verfügung stellen.
Dekan Thomas Foscht verwies auf weitere Ziele des Fakultätstags: „Für Studierende ist er eine gute Gelegenheit zu erfahren, was eine gute Masterarbeit ausmacht. Außerdem wollen wir den Kontakt zur Wirtschaft intensivieren.“ Diesem Zweck dient unter anderem die neue Praktikumsplattform „SOWI-Internships“, die am Fakultätstag präsentiert wurde.

Digitalisierung in der Wirtschaft
Vor der Prämierung der Studierenden stellte sich eine Podiumsdiskussion noch der Frage, wie datenbasierte Technologien die Wirtschaft verändern. Dazu sprachen Stefanie Lindstaedt vom Grazer Know-Center, Alexander Knagge von der Ernst & Young Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft und die Juristin Elisabeth Staudegger, Expertin für IT-Recht an der Uni Graz. Sie alle waren sich einig, dass die Digitalisierung einen Umbruch mit sich bringt, der Risiken aber auch viele Chancen birgt, die es richtig zu nutzen gilt. Moderiert wurde die Diskussion von Stefan Thalmann, Leiter des neuen Business Analytics and Data Science (BANDAS) Center, das im Rahmen des SOWI-Fakultätstags eröffnet wurde. Es wird sich damit befassen, wie sich die durch die Digitalisierung entstandenen neuen Möglichkeiten in der Wirtschaft nutzen lassen, und ist Teil des Profilbildenden Bereichs „Smart Regulation“ der Universität Graz.

It was apparently not just the roars of the dinosaurs that made up the soundscape of the animal world during the Jurassic period. The University of Graz is further expanding its international study opportunities through the European university alliance Arqus and is taking the lead in two key projects. In future, students will benefit from even more joint degree programmes and from simplified recognition of academic achievements through the Joint European Degree Label.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
