Mit Hilfe der Van-der-Waals-Kräfte können Fliegen auf der Zimmerdecke sitzen

Warum können Fliegen auf der Decke sitzen? Der Zoologe Dr. Manfred Hartbauer von der Universität Graz klärt auf: „Fliegen haben ein sehr geringes Körpergewicht und dazu lappige Bein-Enden. Aufgrund der großen Oberfläche haften die Tiere an der Decke oder können auch kopfüber Wände hinunterkrabbeln. Dabei wirken die so genannten Van-der-Waals-Kräfte wie ein unsichtbarer Klebstoff. Das exakte physikalische Phänomen dahinter ist bis heute nicht restlos geklärt. Auch Geckos können sich auf dieselbe Art auf extrem glatten Wänden und Decken fortbewegen. Manche Ameisen, die in asiatischen Regenwäldern leben, haben an ihren Füßen winzige Körperöffnungen, über die sie eine Flüssigkeit absondern. Diese wirkt wie ein Klebefilm auf dem Untergrund, sodass die Tierchen sogar auf äußerst rutschigen fleischfressenden Pflanzen krabbeln können und andere Insekten, die hineingestürzt sind, wieder herausschleppen.“

Record of reported species: Styria wins the global City Nature Challenge

Observers in Styria recorded 5,158 different animals, plants and fungi as part of the international City Nature Challenge between 24 and 27 April 2026. This saw the region take first place in the "species" category. Ostrava in the Czech Republic made the most observations, with just under 140,000, whilst the San Francisco Bay Area had the highest number of participants, namely 3,019.
