Uni Graz unterstützt auf dem Weg zur Klimaneutralität.

Der Krieg in der Ukraine zeigt uns, wie abhängig wir nach wie vor von fossilen Energieträgern sind. Die Universität Graz hat im Laufe der letzten Jahre mit dem „Carbon Management“ einen Lösungsansatz und Tools entwickelt, die Politik, Organisationen, Unternehmen und Einzelpersonen dabei helfen, klimaneutral zu werden. „Unser sechsstufiges Programm berücksichtigt etwa den Verbrauch von Wärme, Strom und anderen Ressourcen oder auch das Mobilitätsverhalten“, beschreibt Projektleiter Gottfried Kirchengast vom Wegener Center der Universität Graz. Pro Jahr werden, ausgehend von den Werten eines Basisjahres, ein sinkendes Budget an Treibhausgas-Emissionen sowie konkrete Maßnahmen festgelegt, um die Einsparungsziele zu erreichen. Die Einhaltung der gesteckten Ziele wird laufend überprüft, und gegebenenfalls wird nachgebessert, wenn eine Zielverfehlung droht.

Dieses Programm zum „Institutional Carbon Management“ setzt die Universität Graz bereits bei sich selbst erfolgreich um. „Wir wollen bis zum Jahr 2040 echte Klimaneutralität erreichen und alle Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter motivieren, sich einzubringen und mitzumachen“, so der geschäftsführende Rektor Peter Riedler. Bis dorthin sollen dann mindestens 90 Prozent der Treibhausgas-Emissionen eingespart sein. Für den Rest von maximal zehn Prozent soll mittels nachhaltiger Speicherung in Wald und Böden zur Treibhausgas-Entfernung aus der Atmosphäre beigetragen werden.

Im Jahr 2020 wurden die Emissionen im Bereich Energie durch konsequenten Einsatz von grünem Strom im Vergleich zum Schnitt der Vorjahre bereits um 43 Prozent reduziert. Jene aus dem Pendelverkehr und den Dienstreisen der MitarbeiterInnen sanken um 62 Prozent. Insgesamt sparte die Universität im Pandemiejahr 2020 fast die Hälfte der Emissionen ein. Bis 2030 sollen es durch langfristig wirksamen Emissionsabbau mindestens 68 Prozent sein. Dazu beitragen sollen Maßnahmen wie der Ausbau der Photovoltaik und Solarthermie, thermische Gebäudesanierung sowie die Förderung nachhaltiger Mobilität.

Jurassic Sounds: Biologist reconstructs insect songs from 165 million years ago

It was apparently not just the roars of the dinosaurs that made up the soundscape of the animal world during the Jurassic period. Crickets and grasshoppers communicated through a variety of songs and high-pitched sounds, as Thorin Jonsson from the Institute of Biology at the University of Graz discovered together with colleagues from the universities of Lincoln, Bristol (UK), Beijing (China) and Tempe (USA). The findings on what are so far the oldest traces of sound on Earth have just been published in the journal PNAS.
