Meteorologischer Winter ging mit Temperaturrekord zu Ende. Uni-Graz-Messstation meldete Höchstwert für Februar seit 1894

Der Klimawandel lässt grüßen: Am 28. Februar 2019, dem letzten Tag des meteorologischen Winters, wurde an der Station Graz-Universität eine Maximumstemperatur von 22.8 Grad Celsius gemessen. Das ist der höchste Wert in den Monaten Dezember, Jänner, Februar seit Beginn der Aufzeichnung von Extremtemperaturen im Jahr 1894. Und es ist gleichzeitig die höchste Temperatur, die bis jetzt in Graz in einem meteorologischen Winter verzeichnet wurde. "Wir haben festgestellt, dass besonders seit 2008 sieben auffällig erhöhte Werte im meteorologischen Winter gemessen wurden", erklärt Physiker Ulrich Foelsche. So zeichnete die Wetterstation am 10. Jänner 2015 21 Grad und am 25. Februar 2008 20,5 Grad auf. Foelsche arbeitet am Wegener Center für Klima und Globalen Wandel, das international renommiert auf dem Gebiet der Klimaforschung und federführend bei der Beantwortung klimarelevanter Fragestellungen ist.

In 2026, Earth’s surface air temperature is expected to reach 1.62 degrees, and in 2027 even 1.71 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The long-term temperature rise – an average over a 20-year period – is predicted to exceed the 1.5-degree threshold of the Paris Agreement as of 2026 already. For the first time, researchers at the University of Graz have been able to make such a forecast so far in advance. The intensifying El Niño climate event favors forecast skill and thereby facilitates a reliable computation.
