Online-Diskussion zu umstrittener UG-Novelle lockte mehr als 650 TeilnehmerInnen an.

Rechts- und Politikwissenschafter Klaus Poier bewies am 4. Dezember 2020 mit dem Thema der Eröffnungsveranstaltung des von ihm geleiteten „Zentrums für Hochschulrecht und Hochschulgovernance“ an der Universität Graz den richtigen Riecher. Mehr als 650 TeilnehmerInnen beteiligten sich an der Veranstaltung zur geplanten Novelle des Universitätsgesetzes, fast die Hälfte davon stellten auch Fragen im Chat. Prominente TeilnehmerInnen am virtuellen Podium waren die Präsidentin der Universitätenkonferenz und TU Wien-Rektorin Sabine Seidler, der für die Universitäten zuständige Sektionschef im Bildungsministerium Elmar Pichl, der Sprecher der Uni-Senatsvorsitzenden Gernot Kubin, der Vorsitzende des Klagenfurter Unirates Werner Wutscher sowie die Bundes-ÖH-Vorsitzende Sabine Hanger.

Seidler lobte beim vorliegenden Gesetzesentwurf vor allem die Absicht, die Verbindlichkeit bei den Studierenden zu steigern, weil die Universitäten „mit einer Mindestleistung kein Problem“ hätten. Wutscher strich die Möglichkeit hervor, die Planbarkeit und Klarheit bei der Universitätsteuerung zu verbessern und damit auch die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit zu erhalten. ÖH-Vorsitzende Hanger ging „das Gesamtbild“ bei der Novelle ab, vor allem die Reduktion der Prüfungswochen war ihr ein besonderer Dorn im Auge. Überaus harsche Kritik hagelte es von Seiten des Sprechers der Uni-Senate Gernot Kubin, der mit der Abstellung von Rektorats-Beauftragten in Berufungskommissionen gar eine „Bespitzelung“ witterte und darüber hinaus sowohl gegen die geplante „Entmachtung“ im Bereich der Curricula-Erstellung sowie bei der Rektors-Wiederwahl mobil machte. Für Seidler aber trügen Berufungsbeauftragte ganz wesentlich zur dringend notwendigen Qualitätssicherung bei Berufungen bei.

Sektionschef Pichl skizzierte abschließend umfassend die Zielsetzungen der lange geplanten rund 150 Novellierungsanordnungen: die Steigerung der finanzierungsrelevanten Prüfungsaktivität, die Verkürzung der Studiendauern, die Senkung der Drop-out-Raten, die generelle Erhöhung der Verbindlichkeit sowie die Verbesserung der Studierbarkeit. Ein besonderes Anliegen ist ihm eine „ECTS/Workload-Gerechtigkeit“, wofür "intensivere Evaluierungen" notwendig seien. Auch sieht er in den Learning Agreements für Studierende, die im Studium schon weiter fortgeschritten sind, die Möglichkeit, diese besonders gut zu einem erfolgreichen Studienabschluss zu begleiten. Die verbindliche Planbarkeit der Prüfungstermine bereits zu Beginn des jeweiligen Semesters komme vor allem Berufstägigen entgegen. Weiters ist ihm die Steigerung der Durchlässigkeit durch die Anrechenbarkeit von anderen Bildungs- und Karriereteilen wichtig. Seine Abschluss-Bemerkung „Jedenfalls freue ich mich auf einen konstruktiven Diskurs“ ließ darauf schließen, dass noch nicht in allen Punkten das letzte Wort gesprochen ist.

Jurassic Sounds: Biologist reconstructs insect songs from 165 million years ago

It was apparently not just the roars of the dinosaurs that made up the soundscape of the animal world during the Jurassic period. Crickets and grasshoppers communicated through a variety of songs and high-pitched sounds, as Thorin Jonsson from the Institute of Biology at the University of Graz discovered together with colleagues from the universities of Lincoln, Bristol (UK), Beijing (China) and Tempe (USA). The findings on what are so far the oldest traces of sound on Earth have just been published in the journal PNAS.
