Chemiker Kurt Faber erhielt den biocat2016-Award für sein Lebenswerk

Mit Hilfe verschiedenster Enzyme aus der Natur lassen sich chemische Produktionsprozesse vereinfachen und umweltschonender gestalten. Die so genannte Biokatalyse ist zugleich innovatives und weit gefasstes Forschungsfeld, in dem vieles möglich ist und schon einige beachtliche Erfolge erzielt wurden. Graz hat sich in den vergangenen Jahren zu einem "hotspot" der Biokatalyse entwickelt. Nachhaltige Verfahren für die Produktion von Spezialkunststoffen, effizientere Methoden für die Erzeugung von Medikamenten oder ein kostengünstiger und umweltfreundlicher Weg für die Produktion des wichtigsten Grundbausteins für Nylon-6: All diese Erfindungen stammen aus dem Labor von Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kroutil und O. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Kurt Faber.

Letzterer beschäftigt sich bereits seit geraumer Zeit mit der Entwicklung der Biokatalyse. Für seine Errungenschaften in diesem Bereich wurde Faber kürzlich im Rahmen des achten Internationalen Biokatalyse-Kongresses in Hamburg mit dem biocat-Award für das Lebenswerk ausgezeichnet. Mit diesem Preis werden seit 2004 WissenschafterInnen geehrt, die sich durch herausragende Leistungen auf dem Gebiet der Biokatalyse hervorgetan haben. Der Preis wird in den Kategorien „Lebenswerk“, „Wissenschaft“ und „Industrie“ vergeben und gilt als eine der wichtigsten Auszeichnungen auf dem Gebiet der Biotechnologie. Für seine wissenschaftlichen Leistungen wurde Prof. Dr. Donald Hilvert von der ETH Zürich, Schweiz, ausgezeichnet; im Bereich der industriellen Biokatalyse erhielt Dr. John W. Wong, USA, den begehrten Preis.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
