Der Anglist Peter Bierbaumer wurde mit dem Josef Krainer-Heimatpreis ausgezeichnet

Er gründete das Internationale Sprachzentrum an der Universität Graz (ISZ) und die Einrichtung „treffpunkt sprachen“, war Mitinitiator des Europäischen Fremdsprachenzentrums des Europarats in der steirischen Landeshauptstadt ebenso wie der ersten zweisprachigen Schule in Graz, aus der sich die International Bilingual School, kurz GIBS, entwickelte: Univ.-Prof. i.R. Dr. Peter Bierbaumer hat in mehrfacher Hinsicht Pionierarbeit geleistet. Dafür erhielt der Anglist der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz nun gemeinsam mit Mag. Elisabeth Fleischmann, der ersten und langjährigen Direktorin der GIBS, den Josef Krainer-Heimatpreis 2013 in der Kategorie Bildung. Landeshauptmann-Stellvertreter Hermann Schützenhöfer und der Obmann des Josef-Krainer – Steirischen Gedenkwerks, Univ.-Prof. DDr. Gerald Schöpfer, überreichten die Auszeichnung am 2. Dezember im Weißen Saal der Grazer Burg.

 

Der gebürtige Admonter Peter Bierbaumer studierte zuerst in Wien, dann in Graz Anglistik und Germanistik sowie Russisch für ÜbersetzerInnen. 1979 habilitierte er sich für „Englische Sprachwissenschaft“ an der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, wo er seit 1982 als außerordentlicher Universitätsprofessor in den Bereichen historische Linguistik und Fachsprachen lehrte und forschte. Bierbaumer leitete die Abteilung für Sprachausbildung und Didaktik bzw. Fachsprachen. Der von ihm etablierte Studiengang „Europa: Sprachen, Wirtschaft und Recht“, der in Zusammenarbeit mit der Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fakultät erarbeitet wurde, trug wesentlich dazu bei, dass die Anglistik heute zu den beliebtesten Studien der Geisteswissenschaftlichen Fakultät zählt. 1986 wurde Peter Bierbaumer zum Vorstand des Instituts für Anglistik bestellt.

Über 16 Jahre lang war er auch Präsident der Anglo Austrian Society Steiermark und hat mehrere Institutionen geschaffen, die den AbsolventInnen ermöglichen sollten, in den Arbeitsmarkt einzusteigen, so das oben erwähnte ISZ und „treffpunkt sprachen“.

 

1991 startete die erste zweisprachige Schule in Graz als Projekt innerhalb des Pestalozzi-Gymnasiums unter der wissenschaftlichen Begleitung von Peter Bierbaumer und der schulischen Betreuung von Elisabeth Fleischmann. Die Idee kam von Bierbaumer und Dr. Werner Kristoferitsch, damals Direktor des Pestalozzi-Gymnasiums, finanzielle Unterstützung leisteten AMS, Wirtschaftskammer und Industriellenvereinigung. Drei Jahre später erhielt die GIBS erstmals einen eigenen Standort in der Marschallgasse. Seit 1999 ist sie eine eigene Schule, die 2010 in die ehemaligen Räumlichkeiten der Pädagogischen Akademie der Diözese Graz-Seckau in der Georgigasse in Graz-Eggenberg übersiedelte.

Peter Bierbaumer ist bis heute Obmann des Vereins zur Förderung der GIBS. Als Professor der Uni Graz trat er 2007 offiziell in den Ruhestand.
