Zur UN-Kampagne gegen Gewalt an Frauen: Uni Graz beleuchtete Umgang mit Opfern bei Gericht

Bislang 28 Femizide im heurigen Jahr sind die erschreckende Spitze von Gewalt an Frauen in Österreich. Auch wenn es vermehrt Schutzeinrichtungen für Leidtragende gibt, kann sich das Martyrium selbst vor Gericht noch fortsetzen. Wie geht es Opfern von Gewaltverbrechen im Strafverfahren? Isabella Meier vom Europäischen Trainings- und Forschungszentrum für Menschenrechte und Demokratie Graz (ETC Graz) hat sich die Situation angesehen.

Wie wird die Opferschutz-Richtlinie der EU hierzulande umgesetzt, lautete der Auftrag der europäischen Grundrechteagentur. Dabei lag einer der Schwerpunkte der Untersuchung auf der Lage weiblicher Opfer von häuslicher Gewalt. Obwohl sich die Studie auf Fälle im Jahr 2017 konzentrierte, sind die Aussagen laut Meier nach wie vor gültig.
Die Expertin verortet zwar grundsätzlich einen zufriedenstellenden Umgang mit Opfern in Prozessen – „Österreich nahm eine Vorreiterrolle ein“ –, ein paar Defizite gäbe es dennoch. „Trotz vieler unterstützender Instrumente oder einer Verurteilung von Tätern haben manchmal Frauen Angst vor Vergeltung oder werden eingeschüchtert“, weiß die Soziologin aufgrund ihrer Interviews.

„Obwohl das Opfer die wichtigste Zeugin ist, steht oft der Beschuldigte im Mittelpunkt eines Verfahrens. Man muss verstehen, dass es sich um eine traumatisierte Person handelt, die sich eine andere Behandlung wünscht“, macht die Soziologin auf einen entscheidenden Punkt aufmerksam. Daher komme Opferschutzeinrichtungen eine bedeutende Aufgabe zu, damit Frauen nicht im Strafverfahren einen zusätzlichen Schaden erleiden.

Die Wissenschafterin beobachtet den vermehrten Einsatz von geschulten BeamtInnen, die eine Vernehmung sensibel durchführen können. Die Prozessbegleitung durch Opferschutzeinrichtungen habe sich ebenso sehr bewährt, die bei der Vorbereitung auf das Gerichtsverfahren helfen. Ob sich derartige Institutionen aktiv einschalten, ist derzeit von der Art des Delikts abhängig. Meier empfiehlt hingegen, dass die Prozessbegleitung allen Anspruchsberechtigten proaktiv angeboten wird.

Jurassic Sounds: Biologist reconstructs insect songs from 165 million years ago

It was apparently not just the roars of the dinosaurs that made up the soundscape of the animal world during the Jurassic period. Crickets and grasshoppers communicated through a variety of songs and high-pitched sounds, as Thorin Jonsson from the Institute of Biology at the University of Graz discovered together with colleagues from the universities of Lincoln, Bristol (UK), Beijing (China) and Tempe (USA). The findings on what are so far the oldest traces of sound on Earth have just been published in the journal PNAS.
