Kardinal Kurt Koch, Päpstlicher Rat zur Förderung der Einheit der Christen, zu Gast an der Uni Graz

Hohen Besuch empfing heute die Katholisch-Theologische Fakultät: Der deutsche Kardinal Kurt Koch, Präsident des Päpstlichen Rates zur Förderung der Einheit der Christen, folgte der Einladung von Dekan Reinhold Esterbauer zu einem persönlichen Gespräch mit allen interessierten Fakultätsmitgliedern. „Es passiert nicht oft, dass ein Kardinal an die Uni kommt“, freute sich der Dekan in seinen Begrüßungsworten. Er unterstrich die langjährigen Bemühungen der Fakultät im Bereich der Ökumene, die von mehreren Instituten und zahlreichen WissenschafterInnen getragen werden.
Zu dem informellen Austausch kamen auch Bischofsvikar Heinrich Schnuderl und der evangelische Superintendent Hermann Miklas als derzeitiger Vorsitzenden des Ökumenischen Forums Steiermark.
„Graz ist für mich der Inbegriff der Ökumene. Ohne die Bemühungen der Theologie hier kommen wir in der Ökumene nicht voran“, betonte Kardinal Koch in seinem Statement und unterbreitete der Wissenschaft einen weiteren Forschungsvorschlag: die ethischen Fragen, die derzeit für Divergenzen zwischen den Konfessionen sorgen. „Je mehr die christlichen Kirchen mit einer Stimme sprechen können, desto stärker ist ihr Gewicht in Europa“, mahnte der Kardinal.
Im Anschluss an seine Worte stellten Basilius Groen, Bernhard Körner, Anneliese Felber und Hans-Ferdinand Angel vier Initiativen der Fakultät zum innerkirchlichen Dialog vor.
Die Ökumenische Forschung hat an der Uni Graz eine lange Tradition: 1966 wurde das erste Ökumenische Universitätsinstitut in Österreich eingerichtet. Unter dem Terminus „Grazer Prozess“ treibt die Katholisch-Theologische Fakultät in Kooperation mit der Konferenz europäischer Kirchen die Zusammenarbeit der theologischen Fakultäten aller christlichen Kirchen voran.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
