"Lass Wissen wachsen" hilft dem Botanischen Garten beim Gedeihen. Landeshauptmann-Stellvertreter Michael Schickhofer ist Pate der Sommerlinde

Es ist Frühling im Botanischen Garten. Blumen blühen, Bienen summen, Bäume grünen. Gerade unter den Botanik-FreundInnen ist der Garten in der Schubertstraße 59 Naherholungsgebiet und Ort der Wissenschaft zugleich. Mit einem eigenen Fundraising-Projekt, das genau vor einem Jahr ins Leben gerufen wurde, möchte die Universität Graz diesen Ort besonders würdigen. Zumal der Garten in diesem Jahr ein Jubiläum feiert. „ForscherInnen der Universität Graz erarbeiten Lösungen für Fragen der Zukunft. Der Botanische Garten ist ein einerseits Ort, an dem Grundlagen für wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse gewonnen werden. Und andererseits ein Ort, an dem Wissenschaft für die Öffentlichkeit sichtbar ist und erlebbar wird", sagt Peter Riedler, Vizerektor für Finanzen, Ressourcen und Standortentwicklung.

Was viele nicht wissen, der Botanische Garten Graz zog vor genau 130 Jahren aus dem Grazer Stadtgebiet in die grüne Schubertstraße; diesem Ereignis will man freilich Rechnung tragen und so wurde mit der Initiative "Lass Wissen wachsen" eine bislang einmalige Aktion gestartet. Mittels Pflanzen- und Quartierpatenschaften soll Geld für die Sanierung der Wege gesammelt und die Attraktivität und Sichtbarkeit des Botanischen Gartens erhöht werden. Jüngst hat Michael Schickhofer, Landeshauptmann-Stellvertreter der Steiermark, eine Patenschaft für die Sommerlinde, zu der er einen persönlichen Bezug hat, übernommen. Vizerektor Riedler übergab die Urkunde feierlich.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
