Was tut Wissenschaft für die Gesellschaft? Start der Montagsakademie am 14. Oktober 2019 mit Bienenforscher Karl Crailsheim

Wissenschaft soll Neues finden und unser Wissen über die Welt teilen. Immer wieder wird sie mit dem Anspruch konfrontiert, konkrete Anwendungen oder Entscheidungsgrundlagen für Politik und Gesellschaft zu liefern. Wie gehen WissenschafterInnen mit diesen Erwartungen und ethischen Fragen um? Das Leitthema der Montagsakademie für das neue Studienjahr 2019/20 lautet entsprechend: „Wissenschaft und gesellschaftliche Verantwortung: entdecken – forschen – wirken (1. Zyklus)“. An insgesamt zwölf Terminen geben WissenschafterInnen unter dem Motto „Bildung für alle durch allgemein verständliche Wissenschaft“ Einblicke in ihre Forschungsgebiete.

Eröffnen wird das Studienjahr am 14. Oktober 2019 um 19 Uhr in der Aula der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz die neue Vizerektorin für Studium und Lehre Catherine Walter-Laager. Den Eröffnungsvortrag wird der anerkannte Grazer Biologe Karl Crailsheim halten: „Vom Bienentanz zur Roboterbiene – gesellschaftsrelevante Bienenforschung der letzten 100 Jahre“.

Seit nunmehr 15 Jahren trägt die Montagsakademie universitäres Wissen breit in die Regionen. Die Veranstaltungen finden in der Aula der Universität Graz statt und werden live in 8 regionale Einrichtungen übertragen.

The long-term temperature rise – an average over a 20-year period – is predicted to exceed the 1.5-degree threshold of the Paris Agreement as of 2026 already. For the first time, researchers at the University of Graz have been able to make such a forecast so far in advance. The intensifying El Niño climate event favors forecast skill and thereby facilitates a reliable computation.
