Upgrade für die Magnet-Resonanz-Forschungsanlage "Magnetom Skyra". Mit dem erneuerten Gerät, das seit 2012 an der TU Graz steht, soll tiefer in die Materie vorgedrungen werden

Die moderne Wissenschaft ist auf die neueste Infrastruktur angewiesen. Um am Puls der Zeit zu forschen, international im Wettbewerb zu bleiben, braucht es Investitionen in gutes Werkzeug. Im Rahmen von BioTechMed Graz - der Kooperationen zwischen Medizinischer Universität, Technischer Universität und Universität Graz im Bereich der Biowissenschaften - wurde bereits 2012 in eine MR-Forschungsanlage - Scanner - investiert. Mithilfe des Geräts, das an der TU Graz stationiert ist und dort allen drei Universitäten zur Verfügung steht, konnten bereits Forschungsmittel in der Höhe von vier Millionen Euro eingeworben werden. Vor allem das Institut für Psychologie, das eine Hauptnutzerin der Anlage ist, konnte gemeinsam mit der TU Graz rund 150 hochwertige wissenschaftliche Artikel im Bereich der MR-Forschung und - Anwendung publizieren.

Nun wurde der MR-Scanner einem Upgrade unterzogen; im Rahmen einer kleiner Feier Ende Februar startete der offizielle Betrieb des erneuerten Forschungsgeräts. Wesentliche Verbesserungen sind ein neuer Magnet, der für spezielle Fragestellungen essenziell von Vorteil ist. Investiert wurden rund 840 000 Euro, die von BioTechMed-Graz, der Uni Graz und der TU Graz getragen wurden.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
