Konferenz beleuchtet transatlantische Auswirkungen des Ersten Weltkriegs

Ein Schuss, der die Welt veränderte: Diese Woche, am 28. Juni 2014, jährt sich der Mord des Thronfolgers Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo zum 100. Mal. Obwohl das Attentat von Gavrilo Princip heute nicht mehr als einziger Auslöser des Ersten Weltkriegs gesehen wird, bedeutete der Tod Franz Ferdinands jedoch nicht nur das Ende der alten Ordnung, sondern auch der Beginn eines fürchterlichen Konflikts, der sich mit 17 Millionen Toten zu Buche schlagen sollte.

 

Im Gedenkjahr 2014 beschäftigt sich die Forschung sehr intensiv mit dem Ersten Weltkrieg (siehe Schwerpunktmonate Juni und Juli der Pressestelle). Dabei wird auf verschiedene Aspekte wissenschaftlich eingegangen. Eine am vergangenen Wochenende abgehaltene Konferenz mit dem Titel "North America, Europe and the Cultural Memory of the First World War" widmete sich unter anderem den transatlantischen Beziehungen, die durch den Ersten Weltkrieg neu definiert wurden.

 

Der "Alte Kontinent" Europa hatte als kulturelles Vorbild abgedankt, die "Neue Welt", Amerika und Kanada, erlebten ein neues Nationalitätsgefühl. Wie diese unterschiedlichen Perspektiven sich in der Literatur und dem kollektiven Gedächtnis niederschlugen, analysierten angesehene ExpertInnen beider Seiten des Atlantiks auf der Tagung. Als prominentesten Gastredner konnte Tagungsorganisator Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Martin Löschnigg vom Institut für Anglistik der Uni Graz Prof. Jay Winter (Yale University) gewinnen, einen der renommiertesten Wissenschafter auf dem Gebiet des Ersten Weltkriegs. Jay Winter, der 2010 das Ehrendoktorat der Karl-Franzens-Universität erhalten hatte, referierte über die Rolle, die Sprache im kulturellen Erinnern an den Großen Krieg spielt.
