Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Art Studies
Art history is evolving into art studies. In recent years, the discipline has become increasingly broad in scope: shifting from a focus on historical traditions in Europe to an examination of contemporary culture, photography and audiovisual media, as well as artistic production in other parts of the world. The new Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Art Studies at the University of Graz cover all of this. What role do social and political currents play in art and culture? How are the consequences of colonial rule and Western dominance still evident today? From autumn onwards, students will be exploring these and many other fascinating questions. An additional advantage is the strong practical focus, partly thanks to lecturers from the art and culture sector in Graz. As a result, both the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes provide optimal preparation for a future career in this sector.
Master’s programme in Musicology and Aesthetics of Audiovisual Arts
In addition, the new, innovative Master’s programme in Musicology and Aesthetics of the Audiovisual Arts will launch in the coming winter semester, combining art history and musicology for the first time. The University of Graz is thus taking a pioneering role in the German-speaking world. This programme, too, is strongly practice-oriented. On the one hand, it addresses the growing importance of audiovisual productions and media formats in art and society. On the other hand, its interdisciplinary focus opens up many prospects for a professional career in the cultural sector, ranging from concert halls and museums to festivals and biennials.
