Das Sonnen-Observatorium Kanzelhöhe feierte sein 70-jähriges Bestehen

Es ist wohl eine der ungewöhnlichsten und zugleich bedeutendsten Forschungsstätten Europas. Auf 1500 Metern Seehöhe wird am Observatorium Kanzelhöhe für Sonnen- und Umweltforschung in der Nähe von Villach hochkarätige Wissenschaft betrieben. Vor genau 70 Jahren wurde die Einrichtung erbaut, am 9. Oktober 2013 wurde im Rahmen eines internationalen Symposiums sowie eines Festaktes an das Jubiläum erinnert.
Dr. Michael P. Seiler, Mag. Gundi Jungmeier und Assoz.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Astrid Veronig, Leiterin des Observatoriums, beleuchteten in Vorträgen Gegenwart und Geschichte des Observatoriums sowie die Sonnenforschung während des NS-Regimes und der britischen Besatzung.
Neben vielen ForscherInnen und Festgästen gratulierten auch NAWI Graz-Vizerektorin Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Renate Dworczak und Forschungs-Vizerektor Univ.-Prof. Dr. Peter Scherrer. Die einzige Station dieser Art in Österreich ist seit 1945 Teil der Uni Graz und mittlerweile ein Kompetenzzentrum der europäischen Sonnenforschung.

Als „Geburtstagsgeschenk“ präsentierte das Team rund um Astrophysikerin Astrid Veronig die Webseite „Weltraumwetter Österreich“, die aktuelle Daten und Vorhersagen des Weltraumwetters einer interessierten Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung stellt. http://weltraumwetter.at
Die Kanzelhöhe ist zudem Kernstation in einem aktuellen Programm der Europäischen Weltraumbehörde ESA „Space Situational Awareness – SSA“ http://swe.ssa.esa.int und zeigt Sonnenausbrüche in Echtzeit an.

Around the world in eight stops: the Long Night of Research at the University of Graz

On 24 April from 5 pm, you can take a short trip around the globe at the University of Graz, discovering pecularities of foreign countries or new local features in the entrance hall of the University Library. The itinerary takes you through introduced animal species, political attitudes and the omnipotence of algorithms. There will also be a programme in the historic reading hall, as well as at the UniGraz@Museum and the University Archive.
