Mit “Breaking the Silence” haben Studierende der Universität Graz eine Anti-Rassismus-Challenge ins Leben gerufen. Das Echo ist beachtlich, Mitmachen weiter möglich.

Als RassistIn würde sich wohl kaum jemand von uns bezeichnen wollen. Wir haben schließlich keinerlei Vorurteile gegenüber Menschen mit anderer Hautfarbe, keine Abneigung gegenüber Personen anderer Herkunft. Sicher nicht? Und setzen wir uns auch aktiv für die ein, die solchen Diskriminierungen begegnen?
„Rassismus passiert nicht nur weit weg auf anderen Kontinenten. Rassismus passiert ständig auch hier, in Graz, und in jeder Ecke des Landes“, betont die Amerikanistin Simone Adams, deren Studierende die Kampagne „Breaking the Silence“ ins Leben gerufen haben. Sie wollen zum Aktivwerden aufrufen und gleichzeitig auf unbewusste diskriminierende Verhaltensweisen und tief verankerte Vorurteile hinweisen, die wir als weiße EuropäerInnen unabsichtlich an den Tag legen.
Am Instagram-Kanal @breakingsilencegraz werden während der Challenge, die noch bis 26. März läuft, täglich Aufgaben plus Informationen zu einem Aspekt des Rassismus gepostet. „Mitmachen können absolut alle“, unterstreicht Adams.

Jurassic Sounds: Biologist reconstructs insect songs from 165 million years ago

It was apparently not just the roars of the dinosaurs that made up the soundscape of the animal world during the Jurassic period. Crickets and grasshoppers communicated through a variety of songs and high-pitched sounds, as Thorin Jonsson from the Institute of Biology at the University of Graz discovered together with colleagues from the universities of Lincoln, Bristol (UK), Beijing (China) and Tempe (USA). The findings on what are so far the oldest traces of sound on Earth have just been published in the journal PNAS.
