SoziologInnen der Uni Graz erforschen Risiken beim bargeldlosen Bezahlen

Im Weihnachtsgeschäft klingeln die Kassen auch für BetrügerInnen: Da immer mehr Transaktionen mit Bankomat- und Kreditkarte beziehungsweise über das Internet abgewickelt werden, profitieren Kriminelle von unsicheren Datenübertragungen. Wie Unternehmen und KundInnen mit dieser Unsicherheit umgehen, erforscht Martin Griesbacher, MA, vom Institut für Soziologie der Uni Graz.
Erhöhte Sicherheitsmaßnahmen für bargeldloses Bezahlen fördern nicht immer das Vertrauen in die Technologie, stellt er fest. „Sie können auf psychologischer Ebene Gegenteiliges bewirken, nämlich das Gefühl, dass das Leben gefährlicher wird.“ Das wissen auch Online-Shoppingportale und Kreditkartenunternehmen. Um die KonsumentInnen nicht zu verschrecken, agieren sie in der Regel bei einer etwaigen Schadensabwicklung unbürokratisch und großzügig. „Das Einkaufen soll attraktiv bleiben, Misstrauen am besten erst gar nicht aufkommen“, meint Griesbacher. Den Versandhäusern kommt diese Politik billiger, als gegebenenfalls ein beschädigtes Image mit einer teuren Marketingkampagne wieder aufpolieren zu müssen.
Diese Kalkulation geht allerdings nur so lange auf, wie die Technik zuverlässig genug funktioniert und polizeiliche Maßnahmen in der EU kriminelle Handlungen erschweren. Im Schadensfall ist dabei die Kooperation der Betroffenen wichtig. Allerdings ist mitunter deren Vertrauen in die Sicherheitsorganisationen begrenzt. „Nicht alle Betrugsopfer sind zum Beispiel bereit, ihren Computer zur Spurensicherung den Behörden zu überlassen“, weiß Griesbacher.
Kreditkartendaten und Zugangscodes ergaunern sich meist gut organisierte, international vernetzte Banden, die mit technisch immer ausgeklügelteren Methoden vorgehen. Deren Denkansätze mit dem Verhalten von potenziellen Opfern zu vergleichen und schon im Vorfeld entsprechende Maßnahmen zu entwickeln, um Betrugsfälle zu verhindern und TäterInnen zu fassen, ist das Ziel des groß angelegten interdisziplinären Forschungsprojekts. Das soziologische Arbeitspaket davon leitet Univ.-Prof. Dr. Manfred Prisching. Griesbacher arbeitet Seite an Seite mit Anbietern von Bezahlsystemen, Banken, dem Bundeskriminalamt sowie JuristInnen. Das Vorhaben wird von der Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft FFG finanziert.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
