Am Dach der Universitätsbibliothek wird seit Ende Mai Energie produziert. Eine Photovoltaik-Anlage speist pro Monat 15.000 Kilowattstunden ins Uni-Netz

Die Universität Graz ist für ihren Klimaschwerpunkt in Forschung und Lehre über die Grenzen Österreichs weit hinaus bekannt. Im Profilbildenden Bereich Climate Change Graz untersucht ein Team von mehr als hundert ForscherInnen, welche ökonomischen, produktionstechnischen, sozialen, politischen und rechtlichen Veränderungen für eine so tiefgreifende und nachhaltige Transformation notwendig sind. Als „grüne“ Universität hat sie sich der Nachhaltigkeit verschrieben – auf allen Ebenen. 2016 wurde zum Beispiel das europäische Umweltmanagementsystem EMAS implementiert.

Das jüngste Glied in dieser Serie nachhaltiger Maßnahmen ist eine Photovoltaik-Anlage am Dach des Bibliotheksneubaus. Die Anlage liefert seit 22. Mai 2019 Energie fürs Universitäts-Stromnetz; sie hat eine Größe von 630 Quadratmeter und liefert bei schönem Wetter rund 15.000 Kilowattstunden Strom pro Monat. Über einen eigenen Transformator wird die Energie in das Universitätsnetz eingespeist. Das entspricht dem monatlichem Energieverbrauch von etwa 50 Einfamilienhäusern. „Wir leisten mit gezielten Initiativen, wie etwa der neuen Photovoltaik-Anlage am Dach der Universitätsbibliothek, einen aktiven Beitrag zum Klimaschutz“, betont Peter Riedler, Vizerektor für Finanzen, Ressourcen und Standortentwicklung. Neben einer Umrüstung der Beleuchtung auf  LED hat die Universität Graz seit 2014 eine Solarthermie-Anlage am Dach des Laborgebäudes am Sonnenfelsplatz erfolgreich in Betrieb.

In das Vorhaben wurden insgesamt 270 000 Euro investiert. Ein Teil davon wurde gefördert. Die Amortisation, also die Zeit nach der sich die Investition rechnet, beträgt sieben Jahre. Nach einer dreijährigen Bauzeit wird Ende September die Universitätsbibliothek Graz eröffnet und nimmt mit 1. Oktober 2019 den Lehr- und Forschungsbetrieb am Standort Universitätsplatz 3a wieder auf.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
