Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology positiv evaluiert

Seit fünf Jahren forscht das Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology (acib) an der Entwicklung neuer, umweltfreundlicherer und ökonomischerer Prozesse für die Industrie in den Bereichen Biotech, Chemie und Pharma. Das acib ist ein K2-Zentrum, gefördert im Rahmen des österreichischen Kompetenzzentrenprogramms COMET. Eigentümer sind die Universitäten Graz und Innsbruck, die TU Graz, die Universität für Bodenkultur Wien sowie Joanneum Research.

Nach kürzlich erfolgter positiver Evaluierung empfahl die Jury einstimmig, das acib für weitere fünf Jahre (2015–2019) zu fördern. Für die Forschungsaktivitäten, die an der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz angesiedelt sind, bedeutet das einen Finanzrahmen von rund fünf Millionen Euro. Sie stehen der Biokatalyse am Institut für Chemie (Gruppe O.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Kurt Faber und Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kroutil) und der Strukturbiologie am Institut für Molekulare Biowissenschaften (Gruppe Univ.-Prof. Dr. Karl Gruber) zur Verfügung.

Aus diesem Anlass lud das Kompetenzzentrum zu einem Festakt in das neue Laborgebäude der Uni Graz am Universitätsplatz 1. Kurt Faber gab einen Überblick über die Geschichte der acib GmbH, die Anfang 2010 ihren Betrieb aufgenommen hatte. Rund 200 Beschäftigte forschen und arbeiten derzeit im Kompetenzzentrum in mehr als 40 Forschungsprojekten.

Dr. Mathias Drexler, CEO der acib GmbH, unterstrich die wichtige Funktion des Zentrums als Brücke zur Industrie. Das acib versteht sich als Partnerschaft zwischen Universitäten und Unternehmen und hat bereits über 60 Industrie-Partner.

„Erfolg entsteht durch Kooperation“, betonte Vizerektorin Renate Dworczak. Darüber hinaus hob die Chemikerin auch die Bedeutung des acib als Ausbildungsstätte für den wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs hervor. Die Leistungen der Junior-ForscherInnen wurden im Rahmen der Begutachtung des Zentrums von der Jury besonders gelobt.

Nachdem Univ.-Prof. Dr. Bernd Nidetzky, CSO der acib GmbH, über die Kooperation zwischen Uni Graz und TU Graz im Rahmen des Zentrums berichtet hatte, erhielten die Gäste abschließend noch Einblicke in die Forschungsaktivitäten.

Around the world in eight stops: the Long Night of Research at the University of Graz

On 24 April from 5 pm, you can take a short trip around the globe at the University of Graz, discovering pecularities of foreign countries or new local features in the entrance hall of the University Library. The itinerary takes you through introduced animal species, political attitudes and the omnipotence of algorithms. There will also be a programme in the historic reading hall, as well as at the UniGraz@Museum and the University Archive.
