Pharmazeut Rudolf Bauer erhielt das Ehrendoktorat der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Helsinki

Die Philosophische Fakultät der Universität Helsinki vergibt jährlich Ehrendoktorwürden an Persönlichkeiten aus Kultur und Gesellschaft aus aller Welt, die sich mit herausragenden Leistungen auf ihrem Gebiet auf internationaler Ebene ausgezeichnet haben. Bei der diesjährigen Verleihung in Helsinki war Rudolf Bauer, Professor am Institut für Pharmazeutische Wissenschaften der Universität Graz, unter den neun Geehrten. Weitere bekannte PreisträgerInnen in diesem Jahr waren der Wirtschaftswissenschafter und Nobelpreisträger Bengt Holmström, die Literaturwissenschafterin Mieke Bal, die 2010 in Graz die MeisterInnenklasse des GenderForums abgehalten hatte, sowie Iron-Maiden-Leadsänger Bruce Dickinson. 2017 erhielt Angela Merkel die Auszeichnung.

Rudolf Bauer wurde für seine Leistungen auf dem Gebiet der Qualitätskontrolle und Standardisierungen von pflanzenbasierten Medikamenten und pharmazeutischen Produkten ausgezeichnet. Besonderen Fokus legt Bauer seit vielen Jahren auf die Erforschung von Heilpflanzen der traditionellen chinesischen Medizin. In diesem Bereich spezialisierte er sich ebenso auf die Entwicklung von Qualitätskriterien und die Isolierung pharmazeutischer Wirkstoffe mit Metabolomics-basierten Methoden. Mit der Universität Helsinki verbinden Bauer sehr gute wissenschaftliche Kontakte, auch bei Doktoratsprüfungen war er dort bereits mehrmals im Einsatz.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
