Die Uni Graz präsentiert in der Langen Nacht der Forschung am 13. April Wissenschaft rund um unsere Gesundheit

Kann man langsamer altern? Welche Ernährung ist gesund? Und wie wirkt eigentlich die Traditionelle Chinesische Medizin? Diese und noch viele weitere spannende Fragen beantworten WissenschafterInnen der Karl-Franzens-Universität am Freitag, den 13. April 2018 von 17 bis 23 Uhr in der Langen Nacht der Forschung, die diesmal an der Uni Graz unter dem Motto „Fit bis 100 – gesund geforscht“ steht.

Hauptstandort Zentrum für Molekulare Biowissenschaften
An neun Stationen im Zentrum für Molekulare Biowissenschaften sind die BesucherInnen eingeladen, sich schlau zu machen, wie sie ihre Chancen auf ein langes, gutes Leben erhöhen können und was die Forschung dazu leistet. Dabei sind sie auch zum Mitmachen eingeladen, wie etwa zum Testen von Kraft, Gleichgewicht und Herzfrequenz. Die Stationen bieten sowohl für Erwachsene als auch Jugendliche und Kinder ein lehrreiches und unterhaltsames Programm. Drei Kurzvorträge vertiefen das Wissen auf allgemein verständliche Weise.

Botanischer Garten
Gesunde Nahrung in Form von Obst und Gemüse steht an der Station im Botanischen Garten im Mittelpunkt. Dabei geht es vor allem um die Herkunft von Apfel, Salat und Co. Die BesucherInnen erfahren, wie aus wilden Gewächsen Kulturpflanzen wurden, welche Sorten es gibt und wie sie an Klima und kulinarische Bedürfnisse angepasst sind. Kurzvorträge und Glashausführungen stehen ebenfalls auf dem Programm.

UniGraz@Museum
Gesundheit verbindet sich im UniGraz@Museum mit Umweltbewusstsein und Kreativität. In Kooperation mit der KinderUniGraz sind große und kleine Gäste eingeladen, phantasievolle vegetarische Brötchen zu gestalten. Die besten in den Veggie-Workshops entstandenen Kunstwerke werden mit Sachpreisen belohnt und können selbstverständlich auch aufgegessen werden.

Haus der Wissenschaft
Die fiebernde Erde stellt das Haus der Wissenschaft in den Mittelpunkt. In der interaktiven Ausstellung dreht sich alles um den Klimawandel, vor allem um die Erderwärmung. Besonders spannend ist es für Kinder und Jugendliche, mit Robotern die „Heißzeit“ zu erfahren, im Klima-Archiv Daten zu sammeln oder den CO2-Anstieg in der Atmosphäre zu verfolgen.

Observatorium Lustbühel
Gibt es Planeten außerhalb unseres Sonnensystems? Wie sich solche Exoplaneten entdecken lassen, erklären AstrophysikerInnen am Observatorium Lustbühel. Bei gutem Wetter können die BesucherInnen selbst mit Teleskopen den Himmel beobachten und die Faszination des Weltraums erleben.

It was apparently not just the roars of the dinosaurs that made up the soundscape of the animal world during the Jurassic period. Crickets and grasshoppers communicated through a variety of songs and high-pitched sounds, as Thorin Jonsson from the Institute of Biology at the University of Graz discovered together with colleagues from the universities of Lincoln, Bristol (UK), Beijing (China) and Tempe (USA). The University of Graz is further expanding its international study opportunities through the European university alliance Arqus and is taking the lead in two key projects. In future, students will benefit from even more joint degree programmes and from simplified recognition of academic achievements through the Joint European Degree Label.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
