Ronald Kühnlein untersucht Stoffwechsel der Drosophila melanogaster

Woher bezieht ein Organismus die Energie, die er gerade benötigt? Wie werden Fettspeicher angelegt und wieder mobilisiert? Welche Gene spielen dabei eine Rolle? Diesen Fragen widmet sich Ronald Kühnlein, seit 1. Oktober 2016 Professor für Biochemie an der Uni Graz. Bereits seit 15 Jahren untersucht er die Fruchtfliege Drosophila melanogaster, um Antworten auf seine Fragen zu finden. Er entdeckte Schlüsselgene im Fettstoffwechsel, die denen des Menschen erstaunlich ähnlich sind. „Etwa zeitgleich sorgte der Grazer Biochemiker Rudolf Zechner mit seinen bahnbrechenden Erkenntnissen zur Fettspaltung für Furore“, berichtet Kühnlein. Das Interesse am gemeinsamen Forschungsthema brachte die Wissenschafter in Kontakt und so baute der Deutsche, der 25 Jahre lang am Max-Planck-Institut in Göttingen tätig war, eine erste Brücke nach Graz. Seit dem vergangenen Wintersemester ist er nun ein „Puzzlestein“ im Team am Institut für Molekulare Biowissenschaften und erweitert mit der Fruchtfliege das Forschungsspektrum um einen wesentlichen Modellorganismus zwischen Hefe und Maus.
In einem geplanten Kooperationsprojekt mit Kollegen aus Argentinien widmet sich Kühnlein allerdings einem anderen Insekt: dem so genannten Patagonischen Drachen, der nur auf wenigen Gletschern an Amerikas Südspitze vorkommt. „Diese Tiere sind noch kaum erforscht, man weiß nicht einmal, wovon sie sich in dieser unwirtlichen Gegend ernähren“, so der Wissenschafter. Wie sie unter derart extremen Bedingungen ihren Stoffwechsel aufrechterhalten können, möchte er herausfinden.
