Das Baskische hat weltweit keine Verwandten. Für seine Erforschung der einzigartigen, isolierten Sprache wurde Bernhard Hurch erneut geehrt.

Das Baskische ist für Außenstehende ein Buch mit sieben Siegeln. Aus keiner anderen Sprache der Welt lassen sich Analogien ableiten oder Querverbindungen herstellen. Auch nur Bruchstücke zu verstehen, ist somit ausgeschlossen. Der Linguist Bernhard Hurch befasst sich seit Jahrzehnten mit dieser isolierten Sprache und hat darüber hinaus tausende Beiträge früherer Forscher zusammengetragen und veröffentlicht. Dazu zählen Schriften von Wilhelm von Humboldt und besonders des ebenfalls in Graz tätig gewesenen Baskologen Hugo Schuchardt. Weiters ist Hurch Mitherausgeber des "International Journal of Basque Philology and Lingustics". Für seine wissenschaftliche Leistung wurde er nun von der Baskischen Akademie Euskaltzaindia mit Sitz in Bilbao zum auswärtigen Ehrenmitlgied ernannt. Das letzte österreichische Ehrenmitglied war zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts Hugo Schuchardt.
