Christa Neuper und Hans Sünkel erhielten den Ehrenring der Stadt Graz

Dass Graz eine Stadt der Wissenschaft und Forschung ist, wurde heute einmal mehr bestätigt: Christa Neuper, Rektorin der Universität Graz, und der ehemalige Rektor der Technischen Universität Graz, Hans Sünkel, erhielten den Ehrenring der Stadt von Bürgermeister Siegfried Nagl und Vizebürgermeister Mario Eustacchio.

Sowohl Christa Neuper als auch Hans Sünkel sind international renommierte Persönlichkeiten und in ihren Forschungsgebieten ausgewiesene ExpertInnen. Die Schwerpunkte der Psychologin liegen auf der Entwicklung von Gehirn-Computer-Schnittstellen und Neurofeedback-Anwendungen sowie der Untersuchung der neuronalen Grundlagen kognitiver Leistungen mit funktionellen bildgebenden Verfahren. Als Professorin an der TU Graz und Universität Graz koordinierte sie außerdem die Forschungsplattform „Initiative Gehirnforschung Steiermark INGE-St“ seit deren Gründung im Jahr 2005, bis sie am 1. Oktober 2011 zur ersten Rektorin der Universität Graz berufen wurde.

Hans Sünkel war von 2003 bis 2011 Rektor der TU Graz und hat auf seinem Fachgebiet, der Geodäsie, mehr als 160 Publikationen veröffentlicht und über 270 Vorträge in 30 Ländern der Welt gehalten. Im Laufe seiner wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn hatte er zahlreiche akademische Funktionen inne, etwa den Vorsitz der Internationalen Geoidkommission oder die Leitung des Instituts für Weltraumforschung (IWF). Sogar ein Asteroid wurde 2006 nach ihm benannt: „(21109) Sünkel“, der fast 500 Millionen Kilometer von der Erde entfernt ist. In der Funktionsperiode 2018 bis 2023 ist Hans Sünkel Vorsitzender des Universitätsrates der Medizinischen Universität Graz.

Bürgermeister Siegfried Nagl formulierte in seiner Laudation: „Wir ehren heute nicht nur zwei herausragende Persönlichkeiten der beiden traditionsreichsten Grazer Universitäten, sondern auch zwei Menschen, die unsere Stadt weit über ihren unmittelbaren Wirkungsrahmen hinaus geprägt haben und dies wohl auch in Zukunft tun werden.“ Christa Neuper erfüllte die Auszeichnung mit „Freude, Dank und Respekt“ – in ihrer Dankesrede hielt sie fest: „Ich habe es immer als Privileg empfunden, in und für die Wissenschaft tätig zu sein. Dass ich dafür von der Stadt Graz geehrt werde, ist einfach überwältigend.“ Hans Sünkel stellte an den Beginn seiner Rede ein Zitat von Louis Pasteur: „Das Glück bevorzugt den vorbereiteten Geist.“ Der ehemalige Rektor der TU Graz erklärte in seiner Rede, sein Weg habe ihn vom Übermut über den Mut bis hin zur Demut geführt. Auch den Ehrenring der Stadt nehme er mit Demut entgegen und sehe ihn als Auftrag, weiter aktiv zu sein.

The University of Graz is further expanding its international study opportunities through the European university alliance Arqus and is taking the lead in two key projects. In future, students will benefit from even more joint degree programmes and from simplified recognition of academic achievements through the Joint European Degree Label.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
