Warum künstliche Intelligenz eher ein Mann ist: Netzwerk beleuchtete Gender-Aspekte in der Digitalisierung 

Ist künstliche Intelligenz geschlechtsneutral? Wie lassen sich soziokulturelle und technische Entwicklungen gleichstellungsorientiert gestalten? Die Koordinationsstelle Geschlechterstudien und Gleichstellung sowie das Zentrum für Digitales Lernen und Lehren machten die Fragen am 12. April 2019 zum Thema eines Workshops der „Gender Mainstreaming Experts International“. Mehr als dreißig Expertinnen aus Universitäten und außeruniversitären Forschungs- und Beratungseinrichtungen, aus Institutionen und Verbänden sowie aus der freiberuflichen Forschung und Beratung fasst das Netzwerk zusammen. Ein Impulsreferat hielt Managerin Karin Grasenick, die mit der Universität Graz in unterschiedlichen Bereichen zusammenarbeitet.

Die Gründerin von convelop befasst sich unter anderem mit Gender und künstlicher Intelligenz. Grasenick verweist darauf, dass Maschinen, etwa beim Training zur Spracherkennung, auf vergangene Daten zurückgreifen – mit dem großen Manko, dass „die Anzahl traditioneller und männlich geprägter Texte überwiegt“. Auch in vielen Bereichen, in denen Menschen bewertet werden, werde künstliche Intelligenz immer bedeutsamer. Beispiele sind die Personalauswahl, die Kreditwürdigkeit oder die Bewertung des Risikos, eine Straftat zu begehen. Hier lernen Systeme von bisherigen Entscheidungen und reproduzieren dadurch vermehrt Stereotype. „Das wirft uns sicher zurück“, warnt Grasenick vor den Folgen. Wichtig sei es daher, in der technologischen Entwicklung für mehr Beteiligung von Frauen zu sorgen: „Möglichst viele unterschiedliche Perspektiven helfen, Fehler zu vermeiden.“

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
