Competent for AI: Excellent fitness programme for students

Linguist Boban Arsenijevic with a view to the future

"We recommend research-based teaching, which is very suitable for working on problem-solving skills, critical thinking, data analysis, as well as digital and management skills," says Boban Arsenijevic, summarizing the key findings of the award-winning project. Slavist Boban Arsenijevic has assessed the employability of language and linguistics graduates and developed new modules to improve training. This project has now received an award.

Employers expect more critical thinking, more problem-solving skills and better knowledge of research design from university graduates. This is one result of the EU-funded project UPSKILLS (for UPgrading the SKIlls of Linguistics and Language Students). "We then developed course models and course content to close this gap," reports project manager Boban Arsenijevic. The researchers also provide relevant material and instructions for this. Some of the results were included in the report of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence to EU decision-makers. Recently, the project - a strategic Erasmus+ university partnership - was also awarded the Good Practice Label for 2023.

Read more about UPSKILLS and Boban Arsenijevic's research in the current issue of UNIZEIT.

New groundbreaking computation method for climate extremes

How much will heat, flooding, drought and storms increase as a result of human-induced climate change? In a groundbreaking study, climate researcher Gottfried Kirchengast and his team at the University of Graz have developed a new method for computing the hazards from extreme events: it can compute all relevant hazard metrics for events such as heat waves, floods and droughts in any region worldwide with unprecedented information content. Using it for Europe, the researchers found that anthropogenic climate change has caused a tenfold increase in extreme heat in recent decades. The study, published in the journal Weather and Climate Extremes, also provides a basis for better quantifying the damage to people, ecosystems and infrastructure.
