ExpertInnen der Arqus-Allianz diskutieren live am 25. Jänner über Karrierewege für (junge) Forschende außerhalb der Wissenschaft

Die Arqus-Allianz beginnt das neue Jahr mit einer neuen Ausgabe der Arqus Academic Debates. Die Live-Diskussionen auf dem Arqus-YouTube-Kanal sollen ForscherInnen, Studierende und ExpertInnen aus allen Mitgliedsuniversitäten sowie ein interessiertes Publikum zusammenbringen. In der nächsten Folge geht es um Karrierewege für junge WissenschafterInnen außerhalb der akademischen Welt.

Worum geht’s?
Früher war ein Doktortitel die erste Voraussetzung für eine Karriere in der Wissenschaft. Heute können junge ForscherInnen ihre Dissertation abschließen und gleichzeitig ein Start-up-Unternehmen gründen. Der "unternehmerische Geist" wird von Universitäten auf der ganzen Welt gefördert, sowohl bei Studierenden als auch bei WissenschafterInnen. Aber was braucht es, um ein erfolgreicher CEO zu werden? Warum lohnt es sich überhaupt, für dieses Ziel zu arbeiten? Und wie kann eine akademische Ausbildung dabei helfen, dieses Ziel zu erreichen? 

Diese Arqus Academic Debate zeigt auf, welche Qualitäten ForscherInnen mitbringen müssen, um außerhalb der Wissenschaft erfolgreich zu sein. Und sie fragt danach, wie die Gesellschaft - und damit wir alle - davon profitiert, wenn Forschende ihre Labore, Bibliotheken und Computer für eine Weile verlassen und in die Welt der Wirtschaft eintauchen.

At the University of Graz, researchers are discussing these issues at a conference being held in Austria for the first time.

Jurassic Sounds: Biologist reconstructs insect songs from 165 million years ago

It was apparently not just the roars of the dinosaurs that made up the soundscape of the animal world during the Jurassic period. Crickets and grasshoppers communicated through a variety of songs and high-pitched sounds, as Thorin Jonsson from the Institute of Biology at the University of Graz discovered together with colleagues from the universities of Lincoln, Bristol (UK), Beijing (China) and Tempe (USA). The findings on what are so far the oldest traces of sound on Earth have just been published in the journal PNAS.
