Klimaforscher Douglas Maraun von der Association of American Publishers ausgezeichnet

Eine besondere Auszeichnung erhielt das jüngste Buch von Douglas Maraun, Klimaforscher am Wegener Center der Universität Graz, und Martin Widmann von der University of Birmingham: Die Publikation „Statistical Downscaling and Bias Correction for Climate Research”, erschienen im Verlag Cambridge University Press, wurde kürzlich von der Association of American Publishers (AAP) mit dem Category Award in Environmental Science prämiert. Der Category Award, der im Zuge der Nominierungen für die prestigeträchtigen PROSE Awards vergeben wird, zeichnet Publikationen aus, die einen außergewöhnlichen Beitrag in ihrem jeweiligen Forschungsgebiet darstellen.

„Statistical Downscaling ist ein statistischer Ansatz, um aus relativ grob aufgelösten globalen Klimamodellen hochaufgelöste Daten zu bekommen, wie sie oft in der Klimafolgenforschung benötigt werden“, erklärt Maraun. Üblicherweise haben globale Klimamodelle eine Auflösung zwischen 150 mal 150 und 300 mal 300 Kilometer. Um regionale Auswirkungen des Klimawandels modellieren zu können, braucht man aber oft Informationen an einem bestimmten Ort. „Solche lokalen Daten lassen sich prinzipiell mithilfe statistischer Verfahren gewinnen“, so der Leiter der Forschungsgruppe „Regionales Klima“ am Wegener Center.

Mit ihrer Publikation „Statistical Downscaling and Bias Correction for Climate Research” legen Maraun und Widmann ein Buch vor, das erstmals die gesamte Bandbreite der Ansätze statistischer Regionalisierungsverfahren eingehend behandelt und sie im Gesamtzusammenhang betrachtet. Damit schließen die beiden Autoren eine Lücke in ihrem Forschungsbereich und erleichtern den Zugang zu hoch relevanten Informationen für die Entwicklung und Anwendung von statistischen Regionalisierungsverfahren. Insbesondere behandelt das Buch die Bedürfnisse von NutzerInnen von Klimainformationen, Unsicherheiten von Klimaprognosen, die Güte von Regionalisierungsansätzen und die Erstellung von regionalen Klimaprognosen in der Praxis.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
