Preise für junge ForscherInnen der Uni Graz

Die Gesellschaft Österreichischer Chemiker (GÖCH) vergab im Rahmen ihrer Generalversammlung Anfang November 2016 in Wien Preise für hervorragende wissenschaftliche Arbeiten. Unter den Ausgezeichneten sind auch zwei junge WissenschafterInnen der Uni Graz.
Dr. Melanie Hall aus der Arbeitsgruppe von O.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Kurt Faber im Bereich Organische und Bioorganische Chemie erhielt den Habilitationspreis 2016 für ihre Forschungen zum Thema „Biocatalytic Characterization of Human FMO5: Unearthing Baeyer−Villiger Reactions in Humans“, publiziert im Fachjournal ACS Chemical Biology. Dabei geht es um die Entdeckung einer besonderen Eigenschaft des Humanproteins hFMO5, dessen physiologische Rolle und Funktion im Menschen trotz zahlreicher Untersuchungen noch immer nicht vollständig geklärt sind. Halls Arbeit hat gezeigt, dass das Protein eine bis jetzt unbekannte enzymatische Aktivität aufweist, wobei Sauerstoff für die Oxidation von bestimmten Molekülen verwendet wird. Die Forschungsergebnisse eröffnen neue Perspektiven in der Untersuchung des menschlichen Stoffwechsels.
Dr. Bartholomäus Pieber wurde für seine Dissertation „Organic Chemistry in Single- and Multiphase Continuous Flow Regimes”, betreut von Univ.-Prof. Dr. Oliver Kappe, prämiert. Er arbeitete an der Entwicklung neuer, besserer Methoden zur Herstellung von Pharmazeutika mit Hilfe der Durchfluss-Chemie.
