Nadine Kretschmer erhielt den Dr. Willmar Schwabe-Award 2020 für ihre Forschung an traditionell verwendeten Arzneipflanzen

Die Grazer Nachwuchswissenschafterin Nadine Kretschmer erhielt für ihre Forschung am Institut für Pharmazeutische Wissenschaften vor kurzem eden mit 10.000 Euro dotierten Dr. Willmar Schwabe-Award. Inhalt von Kretschmers Forschung ist die phytochemische und pharmakologische Untersuchung von Pflanzen, welche traditionell zur Behandlung von Krebs verwendet werden können. Dabei geht es insbesondere auch um die Erforschung von Arzneipflanzen der traditionellen Chinesische Medizin. Sie hat in den Pflanzen Onosma paniculata (Boraginaceae) und Periploca sepium (Apocynaceae) relevante Wirkstoffe identifiziert und ihre Wirkmechanismen näher untersucht. Alle Studien folgten einem interdisziplinären Ansatz und wurden mit nationalen und internationalen KooperationspartnerInnenn aus den Bereichen (Bio-)Medizin, Pharmakologie, Phytochemie und Bioinformatik durchgeführt.

Die mit 10.000 Euro dotierte Auszeichnung wird von Dr. Willmar Schwabe GmbH (Karlsruhe, Deutschland) gesponsert und alle zwei Jahre von der Gesellschaft für Arzneipflanzen- und Naturstoff-Forschung für herausragende pharmakologische und/oder klinische Forschung an Arzneipflanzen und Naturstoffen verliehen. Er soll insbesondere junge WissenschafterInnen dazu motivieren, phytotherapeutische und phytopharmazeutische Fragestellungen in einem interdisziplinären Ansatz zu bearbeiten, um die evidenzbasierte Verwendung von Phytopräparaten zu unterstützen.

There will also be a programme in the historic reading hall, as well as at the UniGraz@Museum and the University Archive.

Building biological bridges: Chemist discovers an ecological tool for the pharmaceutical industry

Building a relationship on a solid foundation is also important in chemistry. To produce medicines, disinfectants or plant protection products, stable bonds between carbon atoms must be formed. Conventional chemical methods rely on environmentally harmful reagents and solvents to carry out the desired reaction. This process also produces unusable by-products. Chemist Lilla Gal has discovered an enzyme that enables the same process to take place efficiently and sustainably. The results of her research were recently published in the prestigious journal Angewandte Chemie.
