Wie kann die Leichtathletik die Hürde nehmen? Wissenschaft und Sport skizzierten Potenzial  

Leichtathletik fasziniert die Massen, in den Stadien und vor den Fernsehgeräten. Selbst aktiv springen, werfen, sprinten, hat – abgesehen vom Volkssport Laufen – in Österreich allerdings wenig Bedeutung. Warum ist dies so? Und was kann man dagegen tun? fragte Sportwissenschafter Gerhard Tschakert im Rahmen der Reihe „der bewegte Körper“ am 23. Mai 2019 seine renommierten Gäste: Trainer Christian Röhrling, auch Lehrbeauftragter an der Universität Graz, und Alexandra Toth, der schnellsten Frau Österreichs.

Es sind viele Faktoren, die dazu führen, dass die Leichtathletik hierzulande so wenig Aufmerksamkeit genießt – so der Tenor der Diskussionsrunde. „Es herrscht die allgemeine Meinung vor, ein jeder kann laufen, da braucht es weder Training von Verein“, erklärte Alexandra Toth, österreichische Meisterin über 60, 100 und 200 Meter, das geringe Interesse für den Leistungssport. Das sich auch in den TeilnehmerInnenzahlen bei Wettbewerben niederschlägt. Trainer Christian Röhrling zeichnete ein „erschütterndes Bild“. An den steirischen Meisterschaften 2018 standen bei 18 Disziplinen insgesamt 68 Männer und 35 Frauen am Start. Es gäbe zwar 67 Leichtathletik-Vereine, davon widmet sich allein die Hälfte allen Formen des Laufens. 
„Wir müssen stärker auf die Bevölkerung zugehen“, sprach sich Röhrling für Events, etwa in größeren Städten, aus. „Wir müssen sportliche Vorbilder gezielter integrieren und ihnen auch eine Bühne geben.“ Das Live-Erlebnis bringt Emotionen, bestätigte Alexandra Toth: „Es ist wichtig, für das Publikum angreifbar zu sein.“ 
Neben der Stärkung der Kooperation mit Schulen und besseren Trainingsbedingungen spielen auch die Sozialen Medien eine Rolle, das Feuer für Leichtathletik wieder zu entfachen. 

Die Veranstaltungsreihe „Der bewegte Körper“ ist Teil der 7. fakultät, des Zentrums für Wissen, Gesellschaft und Kommunikation der Universität Graz.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
